Domestic violence can occur between anyone. Countless times I have observed in my work that domestic violence is occurring most commonly between family members in their homes and in their communities. This challenges the stereotype of a man beating his woman and a woman with a black eye. This stereotype is frequently depicted and communicated all over domestic violence materials (i.e. in images, on websites and brochures) and in domestic violence messaging (i.e. power and control wheels and educational presentations). Domestic violence materials and the messaging about domestic violence NEEDS to become much more inclusive.
Here are some things that I have learned through the years about domestic violence in my work.
Men are frequently victims of domestic violence from their female significant other.
Psychological abuse is a VERY common form of domestic violence.
Various family members can become victims or could become perpetrators of domestic violence.
Domestic violence is a problem often created and perpetuated by dysfunctional family dynamics, which do NOT teach nor promote respect, healthy communication, boundaries, etc.
Male victims of domestic violence are often embarrassed and afraid that people will NOT believe them.
Female perpetrators of domestic violence can and have taken advantage of the domestic violence stereotypes in order to hide their behavior towards their male significant other.
Domestic violence can occur in any relationship.
Male military service members can be and have been victims of domestic violence.
Child abuse survivors are much more likely to become involved in a relationship that involves domestic violence.
Substance abusers are frequently victims of domestic violence.
This is just some of the information that I have learned through the years about domestic violence in my work.
