Women Have A Place At The Table – Episode 4

Listen Later

Chrissy Holesovsky and I continue in the podcast series called “Women Have A Place At The Table”. We continue discussing the topic of whether or not women can be called to and function as an elder or pastor, and whether or not women should be allowed to preach or teach or be allowed to function in a role in authority over a man. In Episode 4 we look at some New Testament scriptures that speak about the gifts that God gives to people and the church, like prophecy, words of knowledge, apostles, pastors or teachers. We point out and discuss that in these sections of scriptures that neither Paul or Peter put any restrictions on women being called and anointed to function in these roles or gifts. Peter even tells us to be good stewards, as individuals and a community, of the gifts God gives us.

1 Peter 4:10-11

10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 4:9-13

9 In saying, “He (Jesus) ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? 10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things. 11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,

1 Corinthians 11:2-5

2 Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you. 3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, 5 but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven.

1 Corinthians 12:1 & 4-11

1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers (original Greek means both brothers and sisters), I do not want you to be uninformed.

4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

1 Corinthians 14:26

What then, brothers (original Greek means both brothers and sisters)? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.
