Episode 54 - Dr. Scarlett Horton interviews Frances Maclin

Frances Levonia Maclin, before her employment at Motown, worked for the largest black-owned newspaper in Detroit known at that time as The Michigan Chronicle. She worked in the classified section and obtained the first ad (from the then well-known Woolworth Department Store) to be placed in a black newspaper.

When she was an employee at Motown Records, she was affectionately known by her coworkers as Fran Heard Maclin. She worked for Motown Records for twenty-five years. During her time on staff, she was the tape librarian, later promoted to library director, where she had the oversight of thousands of recording tapes that were recorded at The Hitsville Studio, Golden World Studios, and The Motown Studio in Hollywood.

Frances had the awesome privilege of being a part of almost every hit that was produced at the three studios. She was the first one to handle a session reel after it came from the control room. Her job was to catalog and store the session reels and to dispense them back and forth to the engineer and producer until such time the songs were ready to be mixed and, finally, if selected, to be released.

During her years in the tape library, many songs that passed through there went on to become number one hits in the marketplace—so many that it would take several pages to name them all. However, “My Girl” by The Temptations and “I Hear a Symphony” by The Supremes were two of her favorites that she cared for from infancy to maturity.

Frances considered the tape library to be the bread and butter of the company. She shares her memories of her time with Motown in two books: "I Remember Motown: When We Were Just Family" and "Motown from the Other Side."

Upon retiring from Motown in 1986, Frances joined her husband, Charles, in full-time ministry at Word of Life in Birmingham, AL. Frances served as bookstore manager there for thirteen years before joining her husband in the outreach department.

In this episode, Frances shares her journey of working for this historical company in its infancy, including the spiritual side of the people involved. Scarlett and Frances also talk about her own conversion, and how God led her and her husband into the ministry of helps. Your faith will be inspired as you watch.

Toni Leone Gatlin is known as Mama T. She is a Christian, a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loves teaching and helping people discover God’s love and their life through Jesus Christ her Lord. Her philosophy is simple: “Faith, Hope, and Love in God.”

Oregon is Toni’s native home where she was raised by her precious Grandmother Octavia. Toni’s early years were scarred by abandonment and sexual abuse, which led to years of a promiscuous lifestyle rooted in seeds of fear, anger, and loneliness.

Shortly after graduating from High School, Toni lived in an abusive marriage for nine years. Then, she divorced and lived a single-parent life. She found pseudo security in Martial Arts Culture as an acclaimed black belt artist.

In these struggling times, Toni met Jesus her Savior and Lord. Shortly after, she met and married Walter J. Gatlin, (known as Papa Walt).

Papa Walt and Mama T served for many years in gang ministry with Pastors Kelly and Sara Cohoe. Together they birthed a mobile outreach from their youngest son, LaMont called Love by Example. They also hosted a weekly podcast entitled, “The Gift of Life.”

In this episode, Mama T shares her testimony of conversion and newness of life. Scarlett and Mama T talk about the importance of renewing the mind in order to uprooting toxic thinking and step into the resurrected life of Christ. Rev. Jeri Horton was and is known as a great prayer intercessor and healing minister. Jeri has ministered worldwide as well in churches and conferences, and taught healing school and prayer school at Rhema Bible Training Center. Jeri carries a strong healing anointing.

Jeri was married to the late Rev. Doc Horton for 63 years. Together they served in ministry, building and overseeing churches across the United States.

In 1954 she was supernaturally healed of terminal melanoma cancer. After being healed of cancer, Jeri prayed and asked the Lord to give her a son, which would require another healing miracle due to the fact that her womb had never properly developed enough to conceive and carry another child. Jeri prayed and told God that if He would give her a son, she would give him back to God for the ministry. The Lord heard her prayer and she gave birth to David. When David was born, Doc and Jeri Horton dedicated him to the Lord for His work.

Jeri just celebrated her 93rd birthday, and she's still going strong.

“Ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?” (Luke 13:16)

This woman was doubled over, crippled by a spirit of infirmity, but she had a covenant with the God who sets the captive free. Jesus came to set at liberty those who are bound by sickness, weakness, poverty, disappointment, shame or even religion. It is for freedom's sake that He has set us free.

Scarlett is joined by Cindy Black and Rhonda Pyhala to talk about their experiences in ministry together. Cindy and Rhonda will be ministering at the 2023 Gulf Coast Convention this April.

Cindy Black is a minister with a real passion to see people blessed. Her heartfelt singing and preaching not only encourages faith, but also stirs up the heart of worship. She traveled for more than six years with Kenneth Hagin Ministries as a part of Rhema Singers & Band. Cindy enjoys pastoring Gracepointe Church in Peachtree City, Georgia.

Rhonda Pyhala boldly shares her testimony of victory in the midst of difficulty. She emphasizes the importance of daily worship and fellowship with God. Rhonda attended Rhema Bible Training College as a teenager. She was invited to travel and sing with Dr. Kenneth E. Hagin’s first chorale group called Faith’s Creation. In the years following her graduation, she and her husband pastored various churches and ministered internationally. Rhonda ministered as a praise and worship leader, and also as a soloist.

In this episode, these women of substance talk about the power of God released in an atmosphere where the Holy Spirit is given space to move. They share testimonies of breakthroughs, healings, and answered prayer as a result of taking part in the Gulf Coast Conventions for more than a decade.
