also a short sequence – about 3–4 seconds – of a three-toed woodpecker was shown, but
unfortunately much too short and without description. Because I used to be interested in
ornithology, I know that these birds are rare in Switzerland and live in spruce forests, but they
are more common in northern Europe and elsewhere in coniferous forests. The bird is about 20
to 22 centimetres tall, and the plumage of the barely colourful woodpecker has no red or pink
tones. They build their caves in spruce, and when resin flows out of the spruce by building the
cave, then the Three-toed Woodpeckers keep beating at it, although ornithological science does
not know the reason for resin eating. Since, as I know, you are extensively concerned with
earthly ornithology, I would like to ask you whether you perhaps know the reason why these
woodpeckers eat spruce resin. And if you can say anything else about this bird species, then
that would also be interesting.

genus Picoides in the subfamily of true woodpeckers.
