It's been another whirlwind couple of weeks here in Tokyo! My partner treated himself to a wonderful haircut and head spa experience in Shibuya, while I indulged in a delicious Chinese-Japanese pork liver and vegetable dish at Choraku. The contrasting activities really encapsulate the vibrant diversity of this city.

I'm also continuing my deep dive into the art of ikebana under the guidance of a true master. This time, the focus has been on using water as an integral element of the compositions - creating pieces with flat, transparent containers that allow the water to take center stage, or tall, clear vases that showcase how the plant materials interact with this essential life source. It's fascinating to learn how the water can be leveraged as another means of artistic expression, beyond simply sustaining the flora.

Speaking of nature, I had a chance to wander through the serene grounds of Meiji Jingu shrine during the golden hour, marveling at the interplay of light and shadow dancing across the ancient architecture and tree canopies. It was a profoundly calming experience.

And as a contrast, my partner and I also explored the unsettling yet captivating world of horror manga master Junji Ito. The level of creative detail and immersive storytelling in his works is truly remarkable - it's easy to see why he has such a devoted following.

We also visited the Kenzo Takada art exhibition, which was a bittersweet experience given the recent passing of this iconic fashion designer. But seeing the vibrant, playful way he approached color, texture, and pattern was a joyful reminder of his boundless creativity and zest for life.

One of the highlights was getting to attend a professional wrestling event in Shinjuku with my friend from Osaka. Watching those larger-than-life performers create such an electric atmosphere, while my friend enthusiastically cheered on her favorite wrestler, was an absolute thrill. The passion and community around it was palpable.

And of course, we've continued collaborating with some incredibly talented local creatives on new projects for Golden Age. It's been so rewarding to see the Japanese market respond so positively to our designs - it's really inspiring us to keep pushing the boundaries of what we create.

Amidst all this, the food experiences have been just as memorable. My partner and I had a lively debate over the merits of pancakes versus omelette rice at one of go-to spots. And dinner with a fellow entrepreneur friend at Blue Papaya Thailand was a chance to connect over the joys and challenges of running your own brand.

There's just never a dull moment in this city. I can't wait to see what the next couple of weeks have in store. Until next time!

This past couple of weeks have been a true joy - I've been immersing myself in the ancient art of ikebana under the tutelage of a Sogetsu master in Tokyo. There's something so captivating about creating these miniature floral worlds, delicately arranging the textures and lines of different plant materials within small vessels. I've been learning specialized techniques like the jumonji-dome and jika-dome, which require real skill to intersect the elements in a way that enhances the overall balance and stability. And the pure joy of working with just leaves - arranging them low in the vase to highlight the interplay between the vessel and the natural forms.

It's a meditative practice that sparks the imagination. In between my ikebana lessons, I was able to visit the Mori Art Museum and experience the captivating Theaster Gates exhibition, "Afro-Mingei." As an acclaimed multidisciplinary artist from Chicago, Gates has a truly unique vision that blends his African-American heritage with a deep reverence for Japanese culture. His "Afro-Mingei" concept is a brilliant synthesis of the Mingei folk art philosophy and the "Black Is Beautiful" aesthetic - it's a celebration of craft, identity, and the endless possibilities that arise when cultures cross-pollinate. This landmark exhibition, Gates' first major solo show in Japan, immerses you in his multifaceted practice, from ceramics to architecture to music. It's a thought-provoking exploration of race, politics, and the transformative power of art. 

I also had the chance to discover some of the local creative hubs around Tokyo - popping into a cool pop-up store in Roppongi, wandering the serene rooftop garden in Meguro (complete with a photoshoot on the lush lawn!), and connecting with a wonderful community of Japanese artists, filmmakers, and photographers at several Meetup events. The energy and diversity of the city never cease to amaze me. 

And of course, I've been zipping around on my electric bike, soaking in the sights and sounds of Tokyo's quieter neighborhoods. 

One film that left a lasting impression is "Perfect Days" - a profoundly moving portrait of a Tokyo toilet cleaner named Hirayama. Through his humble yet essential work, the film explores the evolving cultural identity of modern Japan, balancing tradition and progress. It's a contemplative, visually stunning piece that really resonates. 

So much creativity, connection, and personal growth - I can't wait to see what the next couple of weeks have in store. Till next time!

Ep.17: Arriving Tokyo, Living in Shibuya, Online Scam, pre-loved electric bicycles, Ikebana.

I'm getting ready to leave Hong Kong for a few months and stay in Tokyo for two months. Before I go, I've taken care of some important things like renewing our broadband and rental agreements in Hong Kong for another two years because we'll definitely be coming back.

I need to get some Japanese cash since some shops in Japan prefer cash over contactless credit cards. A friend recommended a currency exchange shop in Sheung Wan called "小女孩找換店" that offers good rates for Japanese Yen. When I was there a year ago, there weren't many people in line. But this June, I noticed a queue of people waiting to exchange Thai Baht, Japanese Yen, and RMB.

Before heading to Japan, I made sure to inform my friends that I'll miss them dearly. I had some wonderful moments with my dear friends, including yoga sessions, lunches, and dinners. I invited them to join me in exploring Tokyo.

As I was getting ready to board my flight, I checked Facebook for confirmation on the delivery of two pre-loved electric bicycles that I purchased from Nagoya. To my shock, the buyer had blocked me, and it became clear that they had no intention of delivering the bicycles. I immediately contacted my bank to see if I could retrieve the payment and reported the incident to the Hong Kong Police Department. The police informed me that the buyer's account was flagged as high-risk and explained that Mainland Chinese individuals can open bank accounts in Hong Kong without a Hong Kong ID card, which is beyond the control of the Hong Kong Police.

I felt helpless at that moment. It was disheartening to realize that online scammers could easily take my money and there was little I could do to stop it. It was a valuable lesson, reminding me to be more vigilant and recognize such scams.

I knew I needed an electric bicycle in Tokyo, so I promptly searched for a physical shop selling second-hand bicycles and found one. The other bicycle I found online, but this time it came recommended by a physical shop manager. I ordered it online and paid in cash at a convenience store.

One of my goals in Japan is to enhance my horticultural skills and delve into the world of ikebana. I connected with a Japanese ikebana expert who taught me different levels of ikebana and guided me to learn within a group setting. I've been focusing on understanding the texture, sculptural qualities, and symbolic meanings of each flower and leaf arrangement every week.

During the weekends, I enjoy strolling around the Shinjuku area, where I come across beautiful plants and well-designed gardens on different floors of commercial buildings, balconies and rooftops of residential buildings, as well as in front and behind coffee shops and tea houses. I take pleasure in discovering various Japanese plants and exploring their scents, textures, shapes, and roots.

While I can't say I'm missing Hong Kong just yet, I do indulge in some familiar treats, like having "芒果西米露" (Mango Sago with Coconut Milk) at a Hong Kong-style snack shop near Shibuya Crossing. I also visited a glasses store where friendly Hong Kong staff fixed my sunglasses free of charge.

In June of 2024, I had the opportunity to travel to the vibrant city of Da Nang, Vietnam, for a remarkable 1-week adventure. The weather was truly sweltering, with the temperature soaring to around 40 degrees Celsius every single day. As I stepped out onto the streets, the heat would instantly cause me to start perspiring, and I found myself craving the refreshing embrace of cold iced coffee, which became a daily ritual.

My days in Da Nang were filled with delightful culinary experiences. I indulged in the local specialties, such as the creamy and delectable Bạc Xỉu, the aromatic coconut coffee, and the hearty Phở Bò. Despite the heat, I made sure to stay hydrated by sipping on plenty of water, as the scorching sun had a tendency to leave me feeling dizzy and dehydrated.

One of the most striking observations was the way the locals protected themselves from the intense sun. They took great care to cover themselves from head to toe, donning long sleeves and wide-brimmed hats, a testament to their wisdom and adaptability to the climate.

Getting around the city was a breeze, as we relied on the convenience of Grab cars to ferry us between the bustling city centre and the serene seaside. However, finding quality local Vietnamese clothing proved to be a bit of a challenge, as many of the shops seemed to prioritise selling goods made in China over their own domestic products.

The highlight of my trip, though, was the pampering I received at the local nail salon. As I admired the vibrant rainbow of colours adorning my nails and toes, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pure joy and pride in my decision to indulge in this local experience. The attention to detail and the exceptional quality of the service left me feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

The beach, with its soft, white sand, was an absolute delight, and the towering Guanyin statue on the nearby mountain provided a stunning backdrop that we could appreciate from the comfort of our balcony. I am truly grateful to my partner and his family for making this incredible trip possible, as it has left me with cherished memories that I will forever hold dear.

Back in Hong Kong, I've been diligently maintaining my routine, arriving at the office early each day and immersing myself in yoga and squash sessions with my dear friends. Ep.15: Market booths, Mum’s recovery, Work events, Thyroid, Liver hemangioma, Self care, Belly Dance, Squash and Yoga

For my partner’s brand, Golden Age, we rented a storage room for keeping our designed products. First time using the mini warehouse in Hong Kong. It’s well managed with a good environmental condition. We paid to rent for around 14 months, hopefully, our stock runs fast.

Mum’s hand got a lot better and she recovered really nicely in the house, under my supervision. She showed up and sat under the sun for the whole day for Golden Age Market booth at Wan Chai Harbour front. Thanks to mum’s support, we are in high spirits.

2 work events in a week and I tried to prepare and assist with relationship managers as much as possible. As I got my doctor appointment, I was even more stressed to face the result. Luckily, I was tested for a noncancerous (benign) mass in the liver and I was relieved a bit. Not sure why I would have those Thyroid Nodules and Liver hemangioma in my body. Doctors said that these are quite common to people. I guess I am stressed. My partner keeps telling me to chill and that is just easier said than done.

As a Horticultural Therapist, I shall be calm around nature. Slowly working things out. I just need to focus on one thing at a time.

Visiting (my 20% DNA) Vietnam tomorrow for a week to relax.

Ep.14: 2-week life in HK, Team Dinner, Sewing, Blockchain, Mother’s Day Celebration, Belly Oriental Dance,Hiking.

Team dinner with my new boss for the first time in person. During the meal, trying so hard to curry favour with the boss and his lady. I welcomed them with enthusiasm that bordered on toadying. I have no shame.

After the sewing lesson, we decided to get the sewing machine. Practice makes perfect. Not trying to be perfect but at least, learning different techniques and improving the sewing skill.

Visited a conference where I thought that I could meet like-minded people. Unfortunately, I didn’t encounter any. The conference is full of money-makers who do nothing meaningful via the use of Blockchain. 

Is it going to be user-friendly, environmentally-friendly? Is it going to be a decentralized, distributed and public digital ledger that is used to record transactions which the record cannot be altered retroactively without the alteration of all subsequent blocks and the consensus of the network?

Is it easy to destroy the traditional values of the current banking system ? All bankers, wealth managers are with one goal, how to generate more assets…Could they be eliminated ? 

To share values, to record transactions transparently and to monitor each other so no one could be the monopoly. So politically correct but the execution is far from reality. Those who have enough, keep wanting more. New tech innovation never means that we are healthier, kinder, richer.

Mom visited China and came back, she secretly hid her left hand while we were having dinner at the restaurant. She got infections while she was cooking and she scratched the skin without proper disinfection. After 2 doctors’ consultations, I had to take her under my control, constantly checking if she scratched her skin again, timing her medication schedule, and cooking healthy for her. 

During the weekend, I took my mum to support my friend’s oriental belly dance performance and Mom fo

rgot about her itchy hand during the night, we enjoyed the night and took the ferry back home.

We hiked to Sai Wan Ho Fort Morning Trail, and Mom was angry and reluctant to walk upwards. When we were at the top, I shared the signs of history with Mom and she started to bring up memories of my grandpa. Being part of the counter-Japanese guerrilla force and during the war, how cruel the Japanese army was and how tactful my grandpa was, to fight and protect against the bloodshed.

Working from home this week, literally feel like I am working 18 hours non stop every day. It’s just so comfy at home that I am concentrating on typing more, cleaning more, sharing more…

Found another 2 pieces of nice furniture on Facebook market and decided to get them by myself. The Gogovan driver tried to convince me that I am weak and would need his help carrying the furniture to the car and I said all I need is your trolley then I could transport them all the way to the car. Those 2 sellers were super sweet to help out. People are willing to give out furniture for free as long as there’s fate which brought us together. All my things are not under the sofa nor under the bed anymore. Everything can be easily accessible and used on a regular basis.

Inviting a friend from my previous work for lunch, catching up with my primary schoolmate for dinner,  we enjoy trying out new food and sharing whatever without judging each other.

Yoga every week is a good start, at least, I am moving around, sweating, and accompanying my sweet friend so we could eat more after “extreme” exercise.

Learned more sewing this weekend with my partner, made 2 shopping bags and 2 pouches. Confirming to get a second-hand sewing machine to make more designs and products. Stay tuned.

Since I watched too many Japan-related videos, I got a recommendation by a HK youtuber and found out about this co-working and living building in Tokyo and decided to cancel our original booking on Airbnb. We used to live in apartments in Japan. Let’s try to live in Co-working and living area and see if we can connect more. The rental price is lower and the apartment size is bigger compared to my search on Airbnb. 

Excited to share more when I stay in Japan for 2 months from July to September this year.

One of the differences between Hong Kong and China is that there's a week-long holiday in China while I am working my ass off in Hong Kong and get 1 day off in the middle of the week for the Labour Day Celebration. 

I have to treasure the moment. Been trying to declutter my house, I’ve been cleaning and giving away stuff for the whole week. Hope there are people who find my stuff useful and give them a longer life of use.

Office manager didn’t like the office coffee and recommended trying out some Drip bag coffee. It's a golden chance to get some nicely toasted and tasty drip bag coffee, not so sure of the taste but thanks for the opportunity.

On Facebook market, I was looking for a second-hand / preloved dual motor electric standing desk for my partner as the one he had right now was not up to his preferred height. In Hong Kong, consumers are everywhere and they give up their stuff pretty easily. I enjoy getting some nice second hand items which are useful and with a bit of vintage vibe and almost all furniture in the house are preloved.

It’s really interesting to visit Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence ⁠香港海防博物館 Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence⁠ and I could not believe that I have not been to this museum since I was living here for so long. After the Second World War, The British Indian Army and British Royal Engineers were tasked with the job of clearing ammunition scattered around Hong Kong during wartime, which were sent to Lyemun Fort for disposal…And the Japanese army once occupied Hong Kong Island for a short period of time. Then later the Chinese Military in Hong Kong settled…I remembered that I was one of the trainees of the tertiary military training program in the university. Maybe it’s discipline, self-motivation, nationalism…follow commands and take actions accordingly.

Acai Bowls:

high in sugar from the fruit, similar to any fruit-based smoothie, but when you load them up with healthy fats in the mix-ins or toppings such berries, banana, dragon fruit, kiwi as it can be a balanced meal. You can add nuts, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds etc to the already-antioxidant dense smoothie bowl base.

This week is a bit humid and gloomy, so I tried to make some soup at home. Chinese style soup which can be done in 15-20 mins. Easy, delicious and healthy.

Horticultural Therapy this week - Herbal spice bag. 香料包製作。

材料ingredients:

花椒Sichuan Pepper、八角Star Anise、桂皮Cinnamon、香葉Bay Leaf

All dried and put together in a bag.

有果實、樹葉、樹皮、種子。樹上不同部分都有其神奇功效作用，可以別有洞天。

可以有舒緩痛楚、改善飲食、安家除濕驅蟲的好處。

There are fruits, leaves, bark, and seeds. Different parts of the tree have their own magical effects and can create a unique realm. They can provide benefits such as relieving pain, improving diet, and serving in the home while also having properties to remove dampness and repel insects.

Rainy week this week, my partner received his designed sample, bringing some joy into his busy work life. He is so good at mixing different colors and creating a meaningful and interesting art piece. I am supporting wherever I can.

On the weekend, looking at the gloomy weather at the window, we decided to have a walk in the  air-conditioned shopping mall. I did the impulsive purchase again, bought a set of gym clothes, you know someone that’s not even good at yoga but the whole outfit looks like she’s a professional yoga master. That’s me.

Expensive and irrelevant!
