Opposition comes to hinder someone from advancing in what God has called in their life. Many are not progressing in the word of God because they are facing opponents that they refuse to confront. Because they will not confront it, they have become stuck, complacent and then even begin to compromise God's word. They then become opposers of God himself as they rebel against God.
