One time I was watching a pair of Ospreys, “sea eagles”, as they flew around the river in my backyard. One day they soared so high that I could barely see them with my worn out old eyes. I did notice that they weren’t even flapping their wings, but instead gracefully soaring and catching updrafts as they circled and circled being lifted higher and higher. This was not being done to hunt, though they do circle when they look for unsuspecting fish that make the mistake of swimming too close to the surface of the river, but they do not have near the altitude when hunting. I heard an interesting (true) story the other day about an atheist who debated a believer in an apologetic slugfest. Each person had 45 minutes to make their case and the atheist went first. He was eloquent, polished, well prepared and delivered a strong presentation, ending at precisely 45 minutes. One of my all time favorite football players was Dick Butkus, all pro linebacker who played on the Chicago Bears. He was big, he was mean, he was nasty! He was everything one might want as a linebacker. In an interview he was asked an interesting question. The guy conducting the interview related to him that there is a common saying among fans when rooting for their defensive heroes, “Knock his head off”. The announcer asked Butkus how he would feel if he actually hit another player so hard that he actually did knock his opponent’s head completely off and it went rolling down the field. Yesterday I received a letter from an inmate who is serving a thirty year sentence. He read my book and wrote to tell me that he was inspired by it, but then told me that although he had tried “everything”, nothing ever seemed to go his way. Elvis Presley was a redneck who began his early life “Mississippi poor”. He was good looking and talented with a voice straight out of heaven. He went from pauper to prince in a short period of time. I have always been fascinated with his fairy tale life where he rose to the top and then the tragic ending. Satan battled Elvis using his most powerful weapons, beautiful women, drugs, power and fame; he won that “battle” when Elvis died from a drug overdose at a relatively young age.
