On this episode of Work Feels, we discuss the importance of mental health in the workplace.

We highlight the common factors that contribute to burnout and the stigma around disclosing mental health issues at work. We also provide statistics on the global impact of mental health issues on productivity. The guest speaker, Tasha Broomhall, shares her experience working in a workplace mental health service and how it opened her eyes to the need for better support for those with mental health issues in the workplace. 

Our interview focused on normalising mental health conversations in the workplace and creating a safe environment for employees to share their mental health issues. Tasha emphasised the need for skill development in leaders to respond to mental health issues in a respectful and non-intrusive manner. She also suggested incorporating mental health into safety moments and encouraging leaders to share their own experiences of learning about mental health. Tasha discussed the challenges of discussing mental health in the workplace and provided tips for employees and managers, emphasising the importance of creating a safe space for employees to discuss their mental health. 

Tasha Broomhall discusses the four quadrants of mental health and the benefits of looking after mental health in the workplace. The new book, The Ecosystem of Work, is recommended for leaders to develop an ecosystem that manages psychological safety and helps people and organisations to flourish.

Inner sustainability is a movement that is building rapidly. We haven’t heard much about it in Australia but we’ll be hearing and seeing a lot more over the next few years. 

This movement was born out of a need to speed up our progress towards sustainability and specifically, the UN Sustainable Development Goals. 

Marte Hansen is the Creative Director, Co-Founder and Partner of Awake Communications Agency and chats to us about her work in Inner Sustainability and how we can evolve to tackle critical global challenges.

We jump into the latest changes to the Fair Work Act (not as boring as it sounds). 

We discuss pay secrecy, sexual harassment and flexible work requests. There are some important changes to how these items are handled from a legal perspective which, no doubt, will start to impact the workplace cultures we spend our days in. Our culture impacts our laws and our laws impact our culture. These are really positive changes for employees - putting more onus on employers to look after the psychological safety of their people.

We interviewed Conrad Liveris, an economist and workplace matters consultant, on the inner workings of inflation, why salary growth has stagnated and the glorification of executives … resulting in over 2500 billionaires in the world today. 

Our fav takeaway: HR isn’t great at communicating that they may have plans for you - a promotion, a new role, developing your skills etc. Sometimes it’s worth asking HR straight up “where do you see me going within this company?” and exploring what your managers’ hopes are for your career. 

Our listener story shares her experience when offered an automatic pay rise because her company did a gender pay gap assessment. She takes us through how her manager handled it and the emotions of learning she had been underpaid up until that point.

We dive into racism in the workplace, unpack capitalism and better understand what it means to have a psychologically safe workplace. Juju shares her work story and sheds light on how we can create culturally diverse workplaces that feel safe. Erfan is our special guest, he shares his wisdom and insights on the roots of racism, the inner workings of unconscious bias and how white power structures control the media we consume, the policies we live by and systems we work within (and so much more).

Our fav takeaway: Racism isn’t a dirty word, don’t be scared to use it. Once we move past the discomfort, shame and guilt that the word ‘racism’ can evoke, we can have productive conversations, take action and create a fairer (and more fabulous) workplace for all.

It was a bold (and scary) move to start our podcast with an episode on racism but we are so glad we dove in head first. From sharing Juju’s story to having our brains blown by Erfan’s brilliant mind, we could listen to this episode over and over again.
