- John grew up in a strict Catholic family.
- When he was 10 years old, his sister, as a new high school graduate, announced she was pregnant. Needless to say, this did not sit well with the family.
- A few years later John realized that he was gay but did not come out until he was 26. Two years later he told his family and they disowned him. They did not speak for two years.
- John points to this period in his life as offering him huge learning both in life and career as he navigated all kinds of relationships and how to communicate within them.
- When John’s mother was diagnosed with cancer, she reached out to him and they reconciled.
