Works, Water and Tradition (Mark 7:1-13)

Listen Later

We got to chapter 7 and the Pharisees are out to see if they can catch Jesus up in their questions. We take a look at how the traditions of men are used to supersede God’s commandments.

Sermon Notes: Mark 7:1-13

Series: Out of the Gate

Ice Breaker: Do you have a habit or tradition that has to be done daily? Or weekly?

(Don’t forget to post your answer in the comments, we love to hear from our listeners)

Study Outline:

1. Following Traditions (v1-4)

A. Questions of the Pharisees

B. Mishnah and Rules

2. Jesus Calls Out Pharisees (v5-13)

A. Prophesy of Isaiah (Ish 29:13)

B. Tradition of Men

C. Broken Honor (Exo 20:12)

Big Idea: Outside of God’s commands, our righteousness will not stand.

To the spiritual mind, it is a question of uncaring wonder that men should be so ready to follow

and even fearlessly contend for the authority of human traditions, whole they are just as ready

to ignore the plain teaching of the Word of God. -H.A. Ironside

1. Tradition as Idolatry ( Exo 20:3-4; Rom 1:25)

2. Tradition as Works (Luke 6:46; John 6:28-29)

3. Commands over Tradition (Rom 3:19-20)

Application:

Pick one of the 10 commandments this week and study it. How can this work as a filter in your

life to examine what you are doing and if there is anything in your life that needs to be

addressed.

Take this to the Lord and repent.
