    • From Pittsburgh to the World: Interview with a Foreign Service Specialist

Dale Giovengo joined us to discuss his experience leaving a successful 36-year career with Giant Eagle to join the Foreign Service.  Motivated by the events of September 11, 2001, he wanted to serve his country and was not able to join the military so he decided to join the Foreign Service in 2006 as a second career.  Dale explains the difference between a Foreign Service specialist and generalist. If you want to be a specialist, which is the career track Dale chose, you will work behind the scenes in the day-to-day life at an Embassy and do not take the Foreign Service written exam like consular/political officers do.

Dale emphasizes that many careers at the State Department with the Foreign Service are designed for experienced professionals coming from the private sector – the average age of a new hire at the Foreign Service is 32 years old, and there are many instances of professionals of Dale’s age joining at a later date in their careers.   Dale walks us through the application process, the day to day life living at overseas embassies, advice for those looking to join the Foreign Service, and shares anecdotes from his career. Find out what shocked him about ordering pizza in Switzerland and why he received a goat as a gift in Mali!

He illustrates the challenges and progress of the war in Afghanistan, detailing the vulnerability to the strides made in the empowerment of women in the country.

Ambassador Crocker is a career ambassador within the U.S. Foreign Service. He was in the Foreign Service for 37 years and, after retiring, was recalled to active duty by President Obama in 2011 to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan.  His previous appointments included service as the U.S. Ambassador to Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Lebanon. • The South China Sea: Perspectives from a U.S. Naval Commander

Commander Brett W.  Holdiman, US Navy, joins us from the US Army War College to share his expertise on the South China Sea conflict. Commander Holdiman has over 2,300 flight hours and over 450 arrested landings. He is entitled to wear numerous military medals and has received various campaign, unit, personal, and service awards, and recently completed a deployment in the Western Pacific.

In this podcast, he discusses the implications for US foreign policy for the current land and sea disputes in this region, calling the South China Sea “vital to US national interests”.  China is currently claiming all the waters inside “The 9 Dash Line” to gain fishing and oil rights, which is against the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.  The US Navy’s mission is to protect the global commons (oceans that are not subject to a country’s sovereignty) and as Commander Holdiman explains,  an economic conflict in the South China Sea has far-reaching consequences.

Please note Commander  Holdiman’s opinions are his own and do not represent official US policy of any agency.
