Before Jesus was born, slavery was everywhere in the world. Owning slaves was considered the natural order of society. Then Jesus was born as God voluntarily becoming a slave. In doing so, he turned the social order on its head. The institution of slavery was destined to fade. Outlawing slavery was a distinctly Christian initiative.
