Orticolario, the Italian garden event that takes place in Como at the end of September, is packed with quality plants. Erwin Meier is a plant expert, and the Director of the Meier Garden Centre near Durnten in the Zurich Oberland, and he is part of the "Technical Committee", brought in to judge the plants every year at Orticolario. The Human Rights Council is now in session (6-23rd June 2017). It started last week with harsh criticism from US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley telling the Council it needed to shape up. We take a look at the response from the High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein who defended the work of his office and the Human Rights Council.

“…killing or murder, sometimes on a massive scale, produces shame stunningly, in seemingly inexhaustible supply. The denial of the right to development produces shame. The denial of human dignity, shames. Torture shames. Arbitrary arrests shame. Rape shames. My Office and I hold up a mirror before those whose shame has already been self-inflicted.”

During this second week (of three), on Monday 12 June, the Council will hear from the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, and debate with the Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of expression (watch the facebook livestream).

Monday 12 June The ILO's 106th International Labour Conference also kicked off today at the Palais. It includes an annual World of Work Summit which this year is dedicated to the theme of “A better future for women at work”

He is a well known Brexit and Conservative Party supporter - and he admits he was surprised at the recent UK election result - as were many other political watchers. Here he givers his views on what that result means for the UK, Brexit and the Conservative Party as a whole.
