  • World Weather PowerPoint Video For January 24, 2024

Today's World Weather PowerPoint focuses on the coming trend change in North America that induces a more active weather pattern for southern California, Mexico and eventually the central and southern Plains during the week 2 and week 3 forecast periods. In the meantime, A ridge of high pressure will dominate Argentina for at least the next ten days limiting rainfall and inducing warmer than usual temperatures. Northern Brazil will see plenty of rain. In other news, Tropical Cyclone Kirrily will reach Queensland, Australia bringing some relief to dry cotton and sorghum areas. There will also be a new period of warm and dry weather beginning in southwestern Europe threatening Spain and northwestern Africa with more dry and warm conditions.  Feel free to contact us for more information 913-383--1161

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR JANUARY 24, 2024

    • 00z GFS model was too cold in eastern Canada and the U.S. Midwest during week two generating too much snow in the central Plains – this model run should be tossed out today at least for the second week forecast
      • 06z GFS model run looks better
  • Argentina rainfall is still minimal through day 10 of the forecast today
  • Argentina showers and thunderstorms develop in days 11-15, although the distribution of “meaningful” rain is a little erratic in today’s forecasts
  • GFS Ensemble rainfall for Argentina in week two has been reduced in today’s forecasts
  • ECMWF model has reduced precipitation in Mato Grosso do Sul, southern Mato Grosso and Sao Paulo relative to that of Tuesday in days 8-10 whereas the GFS model has not offered much change of significance
  • Most models today are in agreement that rainfall from Sao Paulo, southwestern Minas Gerais and far northern Parana to Mato Grosso and southern Goias will be lighter than usual in the first week to nearly ten days of the forecast
    • Crop conditions should stay mostly good, despite a firming topsoil due to adequate subsoil moisture
  • Above normal rainfall is still advertised for areas from Bahia and northern Minas Gerais into Tocantins, Brazil in the first week to ten days of today’s forecast
  • U.S. southwestern states, Great Plains and Mexico are advertised wetter in week two of the forecast today by the GFS Ensemble and dictated by the Madden Julian Oscillation
    • The wetter bias may impact a part of the Midwest late in week 2 and possibly in early week 3
  • North America temperatures will rise well above normal this weekend through most of next week and then gradually cool down in early February beginning in the western half of North America first
  • Canada’s Prairies and the U.S. northern Plains will be mostly dry for 8-9 days and then some precipitation will begin with the northern Plains wettest
  • Stormy weather in U.S. Delta, Tennessee River Basin, southeastern states and lower and eastern Midwest will continue today into Sunday and then be followed by 5-7 days of drier weather
    • Some flooding rain is still expected in the Delta
  • 2-Day rain totals from eastern Texas to central Arkansas have already ranged from 2.00 to 5.00 inches with local totals over 6.00 inches
  • Tropical Cyclone Kirrily will move inland to northeastern Australia near Townsville City, Queensland Thursday producing some heavy rain and coastal flooding as well as some strong wind speeds, though the system will come inland with tropical storm intensity which should spare the region from serious damage
    • Some rain from the storm will reach into a part of Queensland’s grain, oilseed and cotton country, but the impact will be beneficial for that region
  • China’s greatest rain in the coming week will be in the southeastern corner of the nation where waves of rain are likely south of the Yangtze River
    • The rain will continue in week 2 of the forecast with some expansion north into east-central parts of the nation
  • Waves of snow and some rain will continue to impact the western CIS keeping the flood potential high this spring
  • West-central and southwestern Europe, Italy and North Africa are still advertised dry for the next ten days
  • The bulk of India is still advertised to be dry over the next ten days

  • The area includes one of the nation’s driest regions and will largely remove dryness from the region
  • Moderate rain occurred Monday and overnight from eastern Texas to central Arkansas where rain totals varied from 1.00 to 3.00 inches
  • Argentina will continue to dry down for another week to ten days, but rain potentials should rise in early February

  • Most of the Brazil will get rain with moderate to heavy amounts in the north from Bahia and northern Minas Gerais to Tocantins and northern Goias
    • Sao Paulo, southwestern Minas Gerais, eastern Mato Grosso do Sul and southern Goias will receive lighter than usual rain, but showers will occur to maintain crop needs

    • This storm promises to bring dryness easing rain to interior eastern Queensland cotton, sorghum, peanut and other coarse grain and oilseed production areas
      • Sugarcane will benefit as well
  • Stormy weather in northern Europe will produce some strong wind rain and rough seas over the next couple of days
  • Southwestern and west-central Europe and North Africa will be dry biased over the next ten days to two weeks
    • Drought will continue in southern Spain, portions of Morocco and northwestern Algeria
  • South Africa will get timely rainfall, although western summer crop areas will need higher volumes of rain to maintain the best crop development potential
  • Western CIS will continue to see waves of snow and some rain keeping spring flood potentials higher than usual
  • India precipitation potentials remain poor as reproduction of winter crops approaches
    • Greater rain is needed to support reproduction
  • China weather will remain fine along with most of Indonesia, Malaysia and southern and eastern Philippines
    • Northwestern Luzon Islands, Philippines is a little too dry
  • Canada’s Prairies and the northern U.S. Plains will remain dry and warm biased for the next ten days and possibly longer
  • West Texas will get a little moisture soon, but not enough to seriously change the moisture profile
  • U.S. Midwest crop areas will get enough moisture to maintain good field conditions except in the far northwest where there will be some need for spring precipitation ahead of planting

    • Argentina is advertised drier again today with little to no rain for the next ten days
      • Southern areas are already drying down and this trend will only make those areas drier

    • Southern and western portions of Rio Grande do Sul will experience some drying – like Argentina
  • A few areas in Sao Paulo, northern Parana, eastern Mato Grosso do Sul and southwestern Minas Gerais may not get enough rain to counter evaporation for a while this week, although the showers will slow drying rates and conserve soil moisture
  • A developing tropical cyclone northeast of Australia is expected to move inland over central Queensland Thursday and it will produce heavy rain from central Queensland to northeastern New South Wales late this week and during the weekend benefiting some of the sorghum, cotton, peanut and coarse grain crops produced in the region
    • Some flooding is also expected which may impact a few crops including sugarcane
  • South Africa rainfall will be greatest in the eastern summer crop areas leaving some concern about western areas getting a little too dry over time

  • World Weather Video Update For Friday, November 10, 2023

Today's PowerPoint on world agriculture weather is focused on the problems coming for Brazil during the next ten days. Not enough moisture will fall and record or near-record heat is expected which may cut production potentials. Some of the driest areas in northern Brazil will experience serious crop moisture and heat stress during the coming week that may lead to some additional early season crop loss and will certainly set back crop development for a while. Some of the driest areas may not plant much during this period either until rain chances improve. Also, in today's report are reviews of Argentina, Australia, Europe/CIS, India, China and U.S. weather situations and expectations for the coming week to ten days.
