The microphone may amplify your voice, but it can’t transform your heart.

As worship leaders, we can spend hours preparing songs, rehearsing transitions, fixing arrangements, and making sure everything is ready for Sunday. But some of God’s most important preparation happens long before we ever step onto the platform.

Jesus said, “Apart from me you can do nothing.” — John 15:5

Before God works through the worship leader publicly, He wants to work in the worshiper privately.

In this episode, we talk about what God does in us Monday through Saturday—the unseen places of prayer, Scripture, surrender, obedience, and simply being with Jesus. Because our greatest preparation isn’t perfecting our production or performance. It’s abiding in Christ.

Before you lead another service, let Jesus lead you. Before you prepare another rehearsal, spend time in His presence. Before you pick up the microphone, give Him your heart.

Worship leaders aren’t built only on Sunday. They’re built in the quiet moments when nobody is watching.

What your church experiences on Sunday should be the overflow of what Jesus has been doing in you all week.

There is a truth that cuts through the pressure many worship leaders carry every single week. “Bad worship services don’t exist because God was still praised.” That line pushes back on a mindset that quietly shapes how we lead. The belief that if everything did not go perfectly, then something was wrong. The belief that excellence equals acceptance. The belief that God is grading the moment the same way people might. And if we are not careful, that belief will slowly drain the life out of what worship was always meant to be.

This episode I share my thoughts on the importance of preparing spiritually before leading worship. We discuss how it's easy to get caught up in the busyness of the day and push our connection with God to later, but that moment never comes. I encourage worship leaders to sit in quiet, listen to what the Holy Spirit wants to say, and respond authentically. We explore how worship isn't just something that happens on stage—it begins the moment we wake up and continues through how we lead our families, teams, and congregations. The key is understanding that worship is an ongoing response to God's initiation, and everything flows from our relationship with Jesus.

Worship does not begin with a lyric. It begins with a thank you. Advent reminds us that God stepped into a dark world with a light that no darkness could stop. As worship leaders, we often think that worship begins when the downbeat hits or when our favorite lyric shows up on the screen. But the real beginning of worship is much simpler. It starts with a thank you.

A thank you resets your heart.
A thank you quiets fear.
A thank you brings your soul back to the God who has already moved and is still moving.

During Advent, we wait for the arrival of Jesus. We remember that before the angels sang, before Mary sang, and before the shepherds ran, the heart of worship was gratitude. God had not yet revealed the manger. Yet His people had already given thanks for His promises. Worship began with thank you long before the choir of heaven broke open the sky.
