Nearly 70% of U.S. adults support banning student cell phone use in K-12 classrooms, according to a survey this fall by Pew Research Center.

And lawmakers across the country are taking note. Wisconsin is one of sixteen states that’s considering adopting a statewide policy. But according to a new report from Wisconsin Policy Forum, many schools in our state are already enforcing restrictions.

Mark Sommerhauser, the Policy Forum’s communications director, wrote the report. Sitting down with our News Producer Faye Parks, he described the patchwork of cell phone policies across Wisconsin.

There’s a flurry of labor activity in the local healthcare industry. Workers at Group Health Cooperative are pressing management to recognize their union. And nearly 1,000 nurses at Meriter Hospital are preparing to go on strike at the end of this month.

The Wisconsin legislature's budget-writing committee, Joint Finance Committee (JFC), met yesterday and in a single vote removed 612 separate items from Gov. Evers proposed budget- everything from a higher tax for millionaires to legalization of marijuana and child-care grants.

Madison is a growing city that’s projected to gain more than 115,000 new residents in the next quarter of a century.

A group of residents have joined Strong Towns Madison, a self-described “local conversation” that’s advocating for sustainable and people-oriented development.

One of their priorities: eliminating parking minimums citywide.

Mike Tarby is one of the group’s coordinators. Sitting down with our News Producer Faye Parks, he described their vision for the city of Madison.

Many child care providers in Wisconsin are strapped for cash. One of the budget items that got the ax in the state Legislature last week: nearly half a billion dollars to support the industry for another two years.

Parents and child care providers gathered outside the state Capitol building this morning to pressure lawmakers to restore the funding.

He says that this is a unique time for this conversation given the reduction of Black elected officials on the Madison City Council, from 9 alders to 5 in the current term. He’s joined by Richard V. Brown Sr, Sheri Carter, and Amani Latimer Burris. They talk about their reasons for running for political office as well as their civic accomplishments.
