Local resident Cassandra Dixon returned from more than a month in Masafer Yatta, in the Hebron Hills of the Palestinian West Bank on April 11th. She gave us an eyewitness report of what she saw and experienced while she was there.

There are no words for their isolation and the abandonment of these rural Palestinian communities by most of the world.

As the situation in Gaza deteriorates, Israeli armed forces and settlers in Masafer Yatta have attacked Palestinian herders with impunity to drive them off their land, destroy their homes and steal their flocks.

To make things worse, the US has provided money, arms and support for these attacks while there is no safety for Palestinian herders.

Cassandra said, “Settlers just shot this dear man, Sheik Said, in the village of Ar Rakeez very near Tuwani. The wound is very deep and he was bleeding very badly."

"Israeli soldiers and ambulance personnel stood around and allowed him to bleed on the ground for some time and then took him in an Israeli ambulance.”

“He is an incredibly sweet man. Loves his children and his wife very much and has worked very hard to help his village.”

His leg was amputated as a result of the serious injury he suffered.

April 21 is the birthday of Bell Case LaFollette. LaFollette was a speechwriter, magazine editor, formidable suffragist, civil rights and peace activist. She also supported and guided the political careers of her husband Bob and two sons, Robert and Philip, who became governor, governor, and senator for Wisconsin.
