Local Activists Plan Training for Immigrants to Know Their Rights by WORT 89.9FM Madison

The IWW 1913 Rubberworkers strike in Akron, Ohio, which spontaneously strike started on February 11th, 1913.The strike spread quickly, including sixteen thousand of the twenty two thousand rubber workers in the city. The strike was eventually lost but taught valuable lessons to the CIO organizing drive in the 30's.

Last week, Wisconsin Public Radio reported that half of Wisconsin Head Start programs are struggling to access funds after the Trump Administration's funding freeze.

Head Start is a federally-funded program that supports low-income children age five and under. Locally, that comes in the form of Reach Dane, serves over 1,000 underserved children in Dane and Green Counties. Last year, Reach Dane served more homeless children than any other Head Start program in Wisconsin.

Jen Bailey has spent two and a half decades working in Head Start, and the last nine as the Executive Director of Reach Dane Head Start. She spoke with reporter Maria Segura on Tuesday.

Ulrike Dieterle, a former teacher and librarian, has served on Madison’s Committee on Aging for the last two years.

She’s now running for elected office, challenging incumbent west side alder Regina Vidaver for her seat on the city council.

With just two candidates in the running, District 5 will skip the primary next week and west side voters will select their next alder on April 1st.

Ulrike Dieterle sat down with WORT News Producer Faye Parks to introduce herself to the voters of District 5.

A town hall from Congressman Mark Pocan this week was standing room only inside the Labor Temple. Constituents crowded the room to hear Pocan's thoughts on the slew of executive orders coming from President Trump. Pocan also took the opportunity to encourage his constituents to reach out to Republican legislators, and to plug his new podcast. Labor Radio's Carol Weidel was there.
