The city of Madison’s Alcohol License Review Committee (or ALRC) weighed a proposal last week to update its own composition, terms, and duties.
The initial proposal also sought to eliminate a seat on the body reserved for a UW-Madison student representative. Critics of that proposal, including ALRC chair Colin Barushok, argue that it risks silencing students’ voices on alcohol policy and nightlife safety.
Responding to the pushback, the committee ultimately approved an amended version of the ordinance that now heads to the full city council. Barushok, who also represents downtown Madison on the Dane County Board, joined our News Producer Faye Parks to share an overview of last week’s vote – and why he believes the ALRC’s action is an example of good governance.
