He was disabled last year when he was poisoned by chewing tobacco laced with heroin and cyanide, resulting in major nerve damage to 75 percent of his body, short- and long-term memory loss and tremors in both hands. He also suffered a disabled knee and post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of serving near the Pakistan border in the Afghanistan war.Miller said he purchased the tobacco at an Afghani shop on base at Gardaze.Miller served as a Humvee driver and machine gunner and a squad automatic weapon gunner with the state Army National Guard's 69th Infantry Battalion until he was poisoned. He performed security missions for convoys and personnel. He was mobilized with the state Army National Guard's 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
