He was disabled last year when he was poisoned by chewing tobacco laced with heroin and cyanide, resulting in major nerve damage to 75 percent of his body, short- and long-term memory loss and tremors in both hands. He also suffered a disabled knee and post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of serving near the Pakistan border in the Afghanistan war.
