We talk about WordCamp Orlando 2017 November 11-12 A Hurricane Free Zone, plus what’s the local WordPress community like in Orlando.
https://2017.orlando.wordcamp.org/
This week, Jonathan Denwood and his co-host Kim Shivler kicked off the show with coverage of the week’s news stories. Lee Jackson jumped in to round out our news story discussion and give great insight into our main topic, “How to Select a Theme for Your Project.”
For our news stories, we covered the latest on Gutenberg including a post by Matt Mullenweg (https://ma.tt/2017/08/we-called-it-gutenberg-for-a-reason/) covered in WPTavern (https://wptavern.com/matt-mullenweg-addresses-concerns-about-gutenberg-confirms-new-editor-to-ship-with-wordpress-5-0). This topic continues to be a hot one in the WordPress community and promises to do so through its official release in WordPress 5.0
Mendel Kurland joined us to talk about being an evangelist and building community for GoDaddy.
Mendel defines an evangelist as someone who not only promotes the platform or company he represents but befriends and truly understands the community he supports.
His work includes supporting the WordPress community and other open source communities, like Drupal.
As a supporter of WordPress both as a business providing upgraded WordPress managed hosting, and as a sponsor of WordPress events, GoDaddy is working to develop products that the WordPress community is delighted with.
According to Mendel, one of the highlights of participating in WordCamps is that he sees an overall cooperative community. Since people are making money on WordPress, you might expect that there would be aggressive posturing and competition. He mainly experienced more cooperation than he has seen in other communities.
This week, the WP-Tonic Roundtable featured an almost full house. Morten Rand-Hendriksen, Sallie Goestch, Lee Jackson, Mendel Kurland, John Locke, Kim Shivler, and special guest Tom McCraken joined host Jonathan Denwood to discuss Morten’s article on the upcoming WordPress Gutenberg editor and learn more about what Google Analytics can tell us about our WordPress websites.
The panel has discussed the upcoming Gutenberg editor several times. This week’s discussion was brought about based on an article written by Morten
(https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/gutenberg-morten-rand-hendriksen) that was then picked up by WPTavern (https://wptavern.com/morten-rand-hendriksen-on-what-gutenberg-means-for-the-future-of-wordpress), triggering a series of comments. Matt Mullenweg joined in on the WPTavern comments giving some good insight into his thoughts behind the new editor.
Special Guest Tom McCracken was here to provide insight into our main topic, Understanding Behavior Flow in Google Analytics. Tom’s company has created the IntelligenceWP plugin designed to help http://www.intelligencewp.com/ companies make sense of their analytics.
Tom shared some of the basic mistakes people make when configuring Google Analytics for their WordPress website along with how to go beyond the basic configuration to measure what people are actually doing on your site. Are they watching your videos, and if so how deep are they going in the video? Where are they spending time on the site and how are they interacting. When configured properly, you can set goals and measure these more meaningful interactions than just counting page views.

This week’s WP-Tonic Roundtable (Jason Marlowe, Mendel Kurland, Kim Shivler and leader Jonathan Denwood), considered different types of Marketing Automation. While many people think of Email Automation, Marketing Automation covers more than email. As Jason pointed out, it’s taking any process in your business and automating it. Mendel likens automation to a trash compactor. It condenses the time you have to manually spend on tasks so that you have time to do other things within your business.
We discussed several Email Automation tools including Drip https://www.drip.co/ and Active Campaign http://www.activecampaign.com/ along with MailChimp https://mailchimp.com/ which now includes automation services in their free accounts.
Text options and text messaging automation were also highlighted since these are growing in popularity.
Mendel has been actively tracking his traffic and email options for his site https://hikingwithgeeks.com/. He considers how visitors interact with the site and measures the effects of his email campaigns. Big takeaway is to set a goal and measure your results. “Don’t spend money or time, indiscriminately on something you haven’t set a goal for and can’t measure.”
In this episode and, in this corner, weighing in at an undisclosed weight, the WordPress Wrangler, the Marketing Magician, the Digital Demagogue - Jason Marlowe.
Haha. Does that work? If not, you can use this:
Jason Marlowe is a WordPress consultant, digital marketer, co-host of the LunchBreak Marketing podcast, and 16-year website design veteran. He's also a husband.
We have a great Friday round-table show with two great special guests Chris Badgett, joint founder of LifterLMS &. Dave Kiss founder of LunchBox.
