All who are under the yoke of slavery should regard their own masters
as deserving of the highest respect,
so that the name of God and our teaching may not be discredited.
Moreover, those who have believing masters should be respectful to them,
because they are fellow believers.
In fact, they must serve them even better,
because those who benefit from their service are believers and dear to them.
Not Discredited
Slavery was common in the ancient Roman Empire. Typically it was entered into because of financial disaster. Christians were both slaves and masters. Christians who served and those who owned were to deal with each other in a truly Christian manner.
When a Christian was both slave and master, the mutual respect was doubled. The reputation of every Christian rests on how each Christian acts. If one Christian acts in an unchristian way, what does that say about the rest of us? Don't discredit the name of the Lord who died for you because you fail to be respectful. Amen.
