In this episode, Sheena Patel chose Rebecca, most famous novel (1938) by British author Daphne du Maurier and the basis for Alfred Hitchcock's film of the same name, as her favourite book. While travelling in the South of France, a shy young woman falls in love with the handsome, wealthy widower Maxim de Winter. The couple marry and move to Manderley, Maxim's country house on the coast of Cornwall. There, the less desirable aspects of Maxim's character come to the fore and it seems that the ghost of his beautiful first wife, Rebecca, still haunts every room.

Pelumi Adejumo koos Dictee, een boek uit 1982 van de Koreaans-Amerikaanse auteur Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. Het boek, dat wordt beschouwd als Cha's magnum opus, is een genreoverschrijdende poëziebundel die zich richt op verschillende vrouwen: de Koreaanse revolutionaire Yu Gwan Soon, Jeanne d'Arc, Sint-Thérèse van Lisieux, Demeter en Persephone, Cha's moeder Hyun Soon Huo en Cha zelf. Al deze vrouwen zijn met elkaar verbonden door hun strijd en de manier waarop naties hun leven hebben beïnvloed en vervormd.

In this episode, Pamela Sneed tells about Homegoing (2017) by Yaa Gyasi. Two half-sisters grow up in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and goes on to live a life of luxury. Esi is captured, sold into slavery and put on a boat to America. Homegoing tells the story of their descendants' lives over the next three hundred years. Yaa Gyasi shows the impact of slavery on multiple generations and moves freely through history – from tribal warfare and slavery in Ghana to the Civil War in America, and from the coal mines in the southern United States to the mass migration to Manhattan in the twentieth century.

Adriaan van Dis koos als favoriet boek Karakter, de beroemde roman uit 1938 van F. Bordewijk die zich afspeelt in Rotterdam in de jaren na de Eerste Wereldoorlog. De hoofdpersoon is Jacob, de onwettige zoon van deurwaarder Dreverhaven en zijn dienstmeisje Jacoba Katadreuffe. Jacob groeit in armoede op maar ontwikkelt zich tot succesvol advocaat. Zijn vader werkt hem voortdurend tegen. Het boek is meerdere keren verfilmd; de versie uit 1997 van Mike van Diem werd met een Oscar en Gouden Kalf bekroond.

In this episode, Zoya Miari chose Edith Eva Eger's The Choice: Embrace the Possible as her favourite book. Eger was sixteen when she was deported to Auschwitz in 1944. She was forced to dance for Mengele. Her fearlessness helped her and her sister survive. In The Choice, she shares her war memories and remarkable stories of those she has helped as a psychologist to free themselves from their own thoughts, and how everyone can ultimately choose freedom.

First published in 1936, it portrays the impact of the Russian Revolution on three human beings who demand the right to live their own lives and pursue their own happiness. Boek van mijn Leven is een programma van Writers Unlimited. Deze podcast verschijnt in de aanloop van het jaarlijkse Writers Unlimited Internationaal Literatuurfestival Den Haag.

In aflevering 2 van 'Wat zullen ze zeggen, Meltem?' gaat Meltem Halaceli in gesprek met actrice, theatermaakster en zangeres Meral Polat over de feministische waarden die zij heeft meegekregen van haar ouders. Haar vader was een feminist en speelde een grote rol in haar opvoeding en beroepskeuze. In dit interview vertelt Meral wat haar vader mee heeft gemaakt in zijn jeugd en hoe de onderdrukking die hij ervaarde als koerdische jongen van invloed waren op zijn latere levenshouding. Haar vader doorbrak traditionele patronen en gaf Meral net zo veel vrijheid als haar broertje. Recent vond ze zijn schriften volgeschreven met gedichten over migratie, liefde en het leven. Ze bewerkte die gedichten tot liederen en slaat daarmee een nieuwe pad in. 

In de podcast Wat zullen ze zeggen, Meltem? gaat Meltem Halaceli op zoek naar het verhaal achter gendergerelateerd geweld. In Turkije, het land waar haar ouders vandaan komen, maar ook in de rest van de wereld neemt geweld tegen vrouwen en moord op vrouwen toe. Tegen deze achtergrond gaat Wat zullen ze zeggen, Meltem? In vier afleveringen dieper in op feminisme, literatuur en de toenemende druk op fundamentele vrouwenrechten.

Wat zullen ze zeggen, Meltem? is een Writers Unlimited podcast, die in aanloop naar het Winternachten internationaal literatuurfestival Den Haag 2023 wordt uitgebracht. 

Listen to our podcast A Short Guide to Meat, in which Winternachten programme maker Joëlle Koorneef talks to Ruth Ozeki, the Japanese-American author who has written about meat like no other. My Year of Meats (1998) is a humorous but very critical novel about, among other things, the meat industry. It was a true sensation. In the book, a raw comparison is made between woman and meat, with two plotlines that are slowly woven together. Thinking about the objectification, sexualization, and consumption of both meat and women's bodies comes together in this novel.

This podcast will help you navigate through the program ‘Meat:Woman’ on the 16th of June 2022 during the Dutch literary festival Winternachten 2022. Ruth Ozeki’s novel My Year of Meats was a major inspiration in thinking about connections between meat and women.

In this podcast episode, we hear from Ruth Ozeki how she gained inspiration for My Year of Meats as a TV producer and through her work on gory horror film sets. Further, Ozeki reflects on questions such as: What role does activism have in literature? And how does the writer look back on her venture into meat over 20 years later, quite a few steps further into the vegetarian revolution? Ozeki is not attending our festival, but her work was a great inspiration for one of the festival programs this year. Therefore, we are honoured to have this substantive conversation about meat, women, and female flesh.
