  • WRM POD Nø15 - Archery Season Recap w/ Connor Koch

It’s the night before rifle opener, and Connor and Jared recap a wild archery season, recorded on the drive with the windshield wipers going. They got into animals every day, the wind fought them almost all season, and Connor filled all three of his tags.

They go through Connor’s opening-day archery antelope: nine blown stalks, a crawl through a burrowing owl colony, and a foot race at last light to finish it. Next is the September bull. Neither of them had hunted the spot before, they both stopped at the same moment because it felt right, and the bull walked in to 14 yards. Then the “gravity elk,” where the wind blew straight at the elk no matter where they set up. The last story is a four-point mule deer stalk across a cliff band covered in loose rock, which Jared watched in slow motion from 40 yards above. That leads into a short explanation of tachypsychia, the time distortion your brain creates under stress.

    In the second half:

    • Shot placement: why Connor puts quartering-to shots on the point of the shoulder instead of trying to tuck them behind it, and how that changes with a rifle
    • Trusting your instincts as a newer bowhunter, and how much fitness and dialed gear take stress off a hunt
    • Connor’s background as a mountain athlete and how surviving an avalanche changed how he handles risk
    • Fast-and-light thinking from mountaineering applied to hunting gear, and the Arc’teryx Squamish wind shell as the most overlooked layer for hunters
    • Why camo isn’t on Connor’s list of what matters
    • Optics: image-stabilized binos as your foundation, paired with the best spotter you can afford
    • Keep sending your questions. We’ll answer more of them through the off-season.

    • WRM POD Nø13 - Is Dry Fire Bad?!?!

I did not expect a controversy around suggesting that new and intermediate shooters dry fire to get better at shoot, BUT, that's just what I got.

Some experienced PRS shooters cause a bit of a stir on IG suggesting that dry fire is not only waste of time, but even bad for your shot process. Well I dive into all the details and nuances about why I believe it is good, especially when you execute a controlled shot process.

Give it a listen and weigh in with your opinion and if you want to get better and precision rifle shooting, hit me up and let me know what you're working on and how I can help!
