WTJU's Lewis Reining talks with author Justin Schon about his latest book, "Surviving the War in Syria: Survival Strategies in a Time of Conflict." In it, Justin uses analysis from over 200 interviews with refugees to argue for civilian agency in times of conflict and to unpack the complex decision making that happens as civilians try to navigate their everyday lives.

WTJU's Lewis Reining spoke with UVA Professor Emeritus Ron Dimberg about South Korea's path toward constitutional democracy. This discussion was focused primarily on the period between the 1980 military coup and the 1988 direct presidential election of Roh Tae-woo. Part 2 of the interview will focus on 1988 and beyond.

Election Day has come and gone, but the election process still continues. And while we’re still waiting to know who has won the Presidential election, a whole host of state and local races in Virginia were also on the ballot, as well as a state Constitutional amendment for redistricting reform.

This week, we sit down with Nathan Moore and Aaryan Balu, from Bold Dominion, for a roundtable discussion on this year's election and what it means for Virginia going forward.

The last decade was one of immense consequence and productivity for pianist/composer Vijay Iyer. In 2012 alone, in the DownBeat International Jazz Critics Poll he was voted Artist of the Year, Pianist of the Year, Small Group of the Year (the Vijay Iyer Trio), Album of the Year (Accelerando), and Rising Star Composer of the Year. Then in 2013, he received the McArthur Fellowship, often called the McArthur Genius Grant. He started the decade recording for Munich based ACT Music and in mid-decade moved across town to ECM. His releases uniformly received critical acclaim as he recorded with a South-Asian trio, then several times with a conventional piano trio, with side trips to solo recordings, string quartets, sublime duos and a surprising three-horn sextet.

The 19th Amendment granted women nationwide the right to vote, but Virginia had refused to ratify it. So when women’s suffrage became the law of the land just two months before the 1920 presidential election, Virginia was caught flat-footed. The deadline to register had already come and gone, so Virginia registrars scrambled to record women on the rosters. The state gave Virginia women one month to put their names on voter rolls...
