“We have been very progressive, I think. Clearly we still need reading rooms. But we also need spaces where people can access digital content in new and different ways.

“I think one of the catalogers many years ago impressed upon me that we didn’t need to develop different kinds of processes for acquiring and cataloging and making materials available, we needed to think about them all as integrated processes. That we could take long-honed processes for doing this in the book world and apply it to the digital world.

“That was an eye-opener that stuck with me for many, many years. Don’t say you have to have different staff or different processes to do these things; bring them together.”

“UVa partnered with Google in the 2000s sometime in that we literally shipped about five hundred thousand books and they scanned and digitized them.

“The challenge and the intent was to ship things that were uniquely available in our collection and not available in the other nine libraries who were also shipping books and materials.

“So they now have millions texts and books available because of that. Of course, librarians complained that they weren’t as perfect as the things that we had done. But the beauty was they had all this material and they have it out there, and you can get to it and see it online.”

“Maybe by the end of that first month I found myself respected clinically. I was in the nursery in the daytime, but night I worked the emergency room.

“My worst night in the emergency room was when I had a little girl with snakebite, and they asked me to come out to identify the snake in the rescue squad, which was beyond anything I’d ever experienced in Vermont or in Puerto Rico. I’m not sure I would have been able to tell a rattlesnake from a copperhead except I was being coached a little bit as I looked at the snake. Because the treatment differs with what kind of snake it is and whether it is poisonous.

“So that was sort of a low point for me in that emergency room. And that was the end of the first month.”

“We were going to build an addition on the Kluge Children’s Rehabilitation Center. And so we talked a lot about what decision-making was like.

“So I brought a group of families together to say, you know, what is it you want in this new clinic building? Expecting that they’d talk about parking and they’d talk about the waiting room. And in fact they said we want our dignity and we want our respect. We want to be included in the decision-making.

“And that was a stunning evening because I had never, ever considered any of those things in my decision-making, or in the way I was leading at that point our little children’s hospital.”

“I do remember standing up to John Casteen in the Rotunda, with my straw hat on, saying the tenure clock and the biological clock were not one. Ended up being on the front page of the paper.

“Well, we’d rabble roused sufficiently so that the faculty senate was having a session in the Dome room of the Rotunda. I was leaving on vacation the next day and I was not maintaining my best cavalier behavior. I stood up and said that the biological clock and the tenure clock were not on the same page, and that it was barbaric what we were doing to our junior women to make a decision about motherhood or academic success. Something like that, maybe more dramatic than that.

“And I remember President Casteen looking at me and thinking, Who is this woman and get her out!”
