“I have a nice anecdote about Larry Sabato.

“We lived for 17 years in Pavilion VI on the Lawn, with my husband who was Dean of Faculty. And in the evening, my husband taught a group of people in our living room, among them Larry Sabato, who was a student living on the Lawn at the time.

“He always came to the seminar late and left early. He was always very busy, even back then. And then, in the middle of the summer, I see him sitting in his rocker under a tree on the Lawn.

“I said, ‘Larry, I didn't know you were allowed to keep your chair.’

“He said he had kept his key, and he never had a chance to sit down and take it easy during the college year, but at last he was going to enjoy his rocker.”

“At the end of the time there, they put up a scaffolding on one side of Pavilion VI to work on something. But in the middle of the night I woke up, and I heard a voice right outside the window, reciting Puck's final speech in Midsummer Night's Dream.

“I crept along the floor in back of these kind of blowing curtains, and he was there, like a student, naked to the waist, reciting this right outside.

“And I said, ‘Who is that?’

“‘Oh,’ he said, ‘did I wake you up? I'm so sorry.’

"’That's all right,’ I said, ‘just be careful going down.’

“And this was near midsummer night, so, it just was so perfect. It was like a wonderful bookend to our time on the Lawn.”

Sherri Moore, Assistant Professor, McIntire School of Commerce, 1985 UVa Graduate

“I'm walking to class and I hear the students in front of me going, ‘Where are you going?’ ‘Well, we're going to commercial law.’ ‘Oh yeah, Wheeler! I hear he's great!’ ‘No, it's not Wheeler anymore, it's some woman. I think her name is Moore.’

“John Wheeler taught this class when I was here. I took it in 1982 and I absolutely fell in love with it. He was a lawyer and I remember thinking, how cool is that, right? He's a lawyer and now he teaches.

“And I think what struck me about the class was it was the most practical class I had while I was here, because he had actually been out there and he'd done it, so he'd say, ‘Well, this is the law, but let me tell you what really happens.’ And that was just so fabulous, you know, as a student, because everything else seemed to be theories, right?

“And so, it's odd to be sitting here now, and I'm teaching the very class that really sparked the interest.”

“The honor system was something as a student here I was always so proud of. I loved that we were treated like adults.

“I remember missing an exam oversleeping and I ran to my professor and he opened up the door before I could even say anything, he says, ‘Oh there you are, come on in my office. I'm getting ready to go to lunch. You can just take it in here. You've got three hours. You're on your honor.’ And he walked out.

“And I remember thinking, ‘How cool is this?’ — after I got my heart out of my throat.

“I love the honor system, but I worry about it today.

“I did a survey in my class. How many of you have ever suspected somebody of cheating? 99 point nine percent clicked ‘yes.’ Okay, next question, how many of you have ever reported anybody for cheating? Not one.

“You know, it's not an honor system unless the students are going to use it.”
