“Under the Skin is a book by the United Kingdom writer Michael Faber, and I’ve taught that. It’s a powerful book.

“A woman traveling on a highway picks up hitchhikers, some of whom are men. But what you learn in the story, the men are put into what can only be viewed as a metaphor for the current agricultural industrial production systems.

“The men are fattened, they are pinned, and they are castrated, because that makes the meat more flavorful, delicate, and tasty. And so that’s a book I give to students because it really changes their frame of reference.”

“And there are some students who know me at certain periods that will say, Greg is the literature guy who guides students through these conversations, some of which are very uncomfortable, about life and about what happens after you get your job.

“In fact, the course is not about getting you a job. “Six years ago I started a program where I began teaching in prison with four MBA students.

“So the program has grown to be called Resilience Education. I went to a lunch our dean at the time, Bob Bruner, invited me to. At that lunch Bob shared with me a letter that had come from a man named Jurvon Hurbon, I’ll never forget his name. He wondered what the Darden school could do for him.

“I think the answer at the time was the Darden school would have very little that they could do for him. It was audacious for him to send this, but he did. And Bob Bruner gave me the letter and told me that he intended to respond to this gentleman who was currently incarcerated. It was pretty momentous.”

“Businesses have a greater ability to shape the world than I think people who are employees or people that work in certain other structures. And so given that, the course creates opportunities, through the novels and short stories, to bring out a greater emphasis and understanding on issues of power, issues of gender, race, class, nationality, that don’t find their way into the traditional case study. But are important things for people who are going to lead people in organizations to think about and be aware of.”

“Prior to same-sex marriage, there was no option to have your partner on your UVa health insurance. And my partner, at the time, now my husband, didn't have employer-provided health insurance. And, so, he was just paying for it himself, and it was very expensive.

“One effort that I spent a lot of time on that we never saw was domestic partner benefits. That was frustrating. But, we did work with HR and with senior administration enough that we were ready when same-sex marriage did happen, that the University was prepared the next day. The forms had been changed to not say ‘husband and wife’ and things like that.

“I remember signing him up for health insurance, being online doing that, and it was a big deal.”
