In his new book, Citizen Coke: The Making of Coca-Cola Capitalism, historian Bart Elmore complicates the narrative that Coca-Cola’s rise to global empire is one of inimitable marketing alone. His research shows how the company’s success has depended on an ever-expanding exploitation of natural resources and taking advantage of public works and government interventions. When UVA’s Board of Visitors announced a tuition increase recently, many students were surprised by the size of the increase and the lack of transparency in the decision making process. Now, UVA Students United, an advocacy group on grounds, is fomenting for change. Members Greg Lewis and Ibby Han joined Soundboard’s Emily Richardson-Lorente to explain their concerns and what they hope will happen next.

Which two go together: monkey, panda, banana? How you answer that question may very well indicate whether you’re an American “liberal” or “conservative.” According to research by Thomas Talhelm, a PhD candidate in social psychology at UVA, liberals and conservatives process information differently “on a very basic level.” And, in turn, those differences inform everything … from a person’s opinion on welfare to the strength of his or her family ties. UVA engineering undergrads Grace Wusk and Trisha Hajela had an idea -- help more girls get interested in the STEM fields by showing them some of the "cool things" they'd get to do as female engineers at UVA. So Wusk and Hajela picked a name, designed a logo, and planned a first-of-its-kind "interactive showcase of women in STEM"... also known as the "Ladies in the Lab". By all accounts, nursing can be a very rewarding job, but it can also be an extremely stressful one. Burnout — when a nurse just ‘up and quits’ — is pretty common. At UVA, the School of Nursing is working to reduce the possibility of burnout with a program called “The Compassionate Care Initiative”. The program aims to build resiliency in nurses, in fact, it recently sponsored development of a national, two-part public radio series called “Resilient Nurses.” Susan Bauer-Wu is the Director of the Compassionate Care Initiative and a nurse herself.
