This week in 1865... Fields Cook led the delegation of African American men up the White House stairs. He and four other men had come to Washington to deliver a list of grievances to President Andrew Johnson. The Civil War was over. The enslaved freed. But freedmen were at the mercy of their former enslavers, and no Virginia laws addressed the newly freed African Americans.

This krater is highly decorated with both designs and figural groupings in the Black Figure technique. It is a complicated process, but put simply, the main decorative elements and figures are painted with a slip that turns black in the firing process. On one side, a wedding scene is painted with bride and groom in a four-horse chariot, accompanied by two women attendants and a musician playing a lyre. One of the attendants holds a torch. The other side has a battle scene, two warriors fight over the body of a fallen third. Again, two female attendants look on.

Jazz at 100 Today! 43 Happy Birthday, Cole Porter by wtju

George Wythe came down the stairs of his Richmond home to have some breakfast. Suddenly Wythe’s stomach cramped. His fingers and toes tingled. His heart palpitated. Wythe knew this wasn’t a simple illness. He had been poisoned!

Emerging as a recording artist in 2002, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt’s warm tone and thoughtful improvisation initially brought hard bop legends Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard to mind. After two decades, his mature post-bop work evidences a willingness to experiment with sound and ensemble make-up. Miles Davis’s Second Great Quintet and his electric period both emerge as influences from time-to-time interspersed with straight ahead acoustic dates. You can count on Jeremy Pelt for inventive improvisation, impeccable tone, nuanced performance and a deep sense of the history of the music. Most recently he has published a book of his interviews with jazz luminaries accompanied by a disc of compositions based on this accumulated wisdom. The Waterbird Dance brings death to life. Aboriginal artist David Malangi Daymirringu’s work honors Yolngu ceremony; more specifically, that of the Manharngu clan. A well-known senior artist, Malangi painted and travelled internationally to represent his community and share his art until his death in 1999. In typical fashion of the art of Arnhem Land, Waterbird Dance is a painting of ochre, charcoal and white clay on bark. Malangi depicts Manharngu clan totems engaged in a transitional ceremony in a vibrant, packed composition to grab the attention of international audiences and celebrate and preserve the traditions of his country.
