  • Pok: Summer '83
Summer '83, by Pok the Bard.
    Album: Anthology
    SUMMER '83
    Did you ever get around
    Smoking posies in the round
Did you ever get to see
The rainbow effect left on me
    Can we be
    Can we see
Do we always have to sit in this uncomfortable position
Is it more than we could ask for
    I don't know
    I'll ask my Ma
Will we ever get out of here
Will we ever see those same old faces
Will we ever finish our mission
    To the sun

  • Pok: She's Beautiful
She's Beautiful, by Pok the Bard.
    Album: Anthology
    SHE’S BEAUTIFUL
Well she’s walking with a sultry air
Golden feather stuck in her hair
Oh me oh my with her wake going by
It occurred to me that I might fly
And these things going on inside my brain
    Won’t stop they only refrain
    Only refrain
    Only refrain
See the world open before you
    It may even appal you
Step back before you fall you
Cos you got a road to travel
    A road to travel
    A road, yeah
    I said she’s beautiful
    Wanna make her mine
    I said she’s beautiful
    And she’s blowing my mind
See the world open before you
    It may even appal you
Step back before you fall you
Cos you got a road to travel
    A road to travel
    A road, yeah
    I said she’s beautiful
    Want to make her mine
    I said she’s beautiful
    And she’s blowing my mind
    Magnet thighs and peacocks' eyes
    Devil in an angel’s disguise
My body's in a frozen sweat
I don't think that she's seen me yet
She's chili hot and full of lust
A case of look but don’t touch
    Look but don’t touch
    Look but don’t touch
See the world open before you
    It may even appal you
Step back before you fall you
Cos you got a road to travel
    A road to travel
    A road
    Yeah you got a road
    I said she’s beautiful
    Wanna make her mine
    I said she’s beautiful
    And she’s blowing my mind

    Fun Facts:
She's Beautiful is one of Pok's oldest songs.
He composed it when he was still at school.
It was inspired by seeing a girl he knew and admired whilst waiting for a bus at exeter bus station.
The earliest versions go all the way back to Now in 1982.
The tempo varies between 66 and 122 BPM the key is A major.
The rhythm guitar parts are both played using Marsha, which had new strings.
The Ice Maiden, which Fedax would have played, was in need of attention on the day.
Pok is on the right channel and Fedax the left.
Pok's lead guitar is played on Nicodemus.
Fedax takes an eight-bar solo on the Ice Maiden, based on his little solo in the Cander version.
This particular version of She's Beautiful is based upon the Laughing Sun version from Cander, which is regarded as the definitive version.
The Cander version is here: https://wudrecords.bandcamp.com/track/shes-beautiful
She's Beautiful was a song in the works for Alchemeon's set, but never made it to a recording before they disbanded.

  • Pok: Freight Train / Pains
Freight Train / Pains, by Pok the Bard.
    Album: Anthology
    FREIGHT TRAIN / PAINS
Freight train coming in from the east
Where it's going is where I care the least
Whispered messages that I did not hear
Take me to the place that my body needs
    I don't know what's happening
I hope I can eat today
Judge and all his courtiers looking down upon me
They say: this is the cripple that wants to be free
He says we owe it to him, it's in his heritage
Wants to know when we're going to let him out of his cerebral cage
    Justice should be seen to
    Let's put him away
    Well thank God for that
    They've split the scene
I was beginning to think I was lost
Gotta get back into normal living
    Plug in that TV screen
    Gonna pull myself together
Gonna have a cool bourbon on ice
After all things like that don't occur
    Think of the children
    It ain't nice
Listen son you've had you're fun
Don't go acting on the run
    Stop wasting time around here
You want to live, you want to give
You want to cut above the rest
Go on out and get it
    To the top
Some people say I left my soul riding on that freight train
    I'm inclined to agree
It has affected my whole brain
Don't listen to authorities that claim they've sussed it all
Keep on driving on your own track
Take care they don't make you fall
Take care they don't make you fall
Take care they don't make you fall
Take care they don't make you fall
Don't let the bastards grind you down
Take care they don't make you fall
Take care they don't make you fall

Recorded, engineered, produced and mastered at Wud Records Studio One, uk, 26th April 2017.
Remixed and remastered at Wud Records Studio One, Central Europe, April 2025.
    Performers:
Pok: acoustic guitar, electric guitars, vocals
    Maxx Damage: bass
    Copyright ℗ 2025 Wud Records.
    Fun Facts:
The freight train described in this song is the exact same train as the one described in Cunning and Tricks, another song on the Anthology album.
One of Pok’s very early songs, this one was mined from his book Golden Temple and the Laughing Sun during an outbreak of archeology.
The entire song was recorded and produced very quickly one day, when other things had actually been planned.
As the whole thing went fast, there was still time for those other things.
Sven was not available on that day, so there are no drums.
The acoustic guitar is George's Yamaha, fitted with 9-guage electric strings.

Fooog'z Bloooz, by Pok the Bard.
    Album: Anthology
    Music by Simon Miller/George Davies.
Copyright © 1982 Pok Songs / Explicit Music.
Recorded at Wud Records Studio One, exeter, uk, 2013.
Remixed and remastered at Wud Records Studios, Central Europe, 2025.
    Performers:
    Pok - guitars
    Maxx Damage - bass
    Sven Stiglund - drums
    Copyright ℗ 2025 Wud Records.
The Anthology songs are the early compositions of Pok and friends, who were also known as The Masters of Drone.
Fooog'z Bloooz started out as a riff, which might have existed as far back in time as the days of Achilles Heel. Certainly it existed in the days of Fooog Dinboffin and the Release.
This version took that riff and expanded upon it just a little. Fooog'z Bloooz was recorded very quickly, to preserve the magic of its re-creation and development.
Its original release date on Bandcamp was 12th May 2013. This, the remixed and remastered version, was completed on 22nd March 2025.

  • Pok: It's a Blue Sky Don't Hold No Rain
It's a Blue Sky Don't Hold No Rain, by Pok the Bard.
    Album: Anthology
IT’S A BLUE SKY DON’T HOLD NO RAIN
And I’ll try and try and try and try to get to you
And I’ll try and try and try and try again
And I’ll try and try and try and try to get to you
And I’ll try and try and try and try forever
    Forever
We came across some bones of men
    Scattered in the rust
So many good souls turned to dust
    Within their shattered husks
And these people had worn jewels
And their heads had been held high
    Speckled foreheads touched the sky
Behold the sparkling in their eyes
Don’t you know it’s a blue sky don’t hold no rain
Don’t hold your love in vain
Cos we’ve still got some loving to do
Some time ago the white man came
    Bringing Bible books and swords
Bound them up in twining cords
In the name of their great Lord
    They slew down the Aztecs
    Inca, Ebu, Maasai
Now we hide in concrete lies
To my Mammon side I cry
    What have we done
    To the Mother Goddess Gaia?
Why can’t we nestle in her
    Warm aching bosom?
Aah aah aah aah aah aah aah aah
Just a little drop of rain
Just a little drop of rain
Just a little drop of rain
    Come bless this land again
Just a little drop of rain
Just a little drop of rain, rain, rain, rain
Just a little drop of rain
    Come bless this land again
Just a little drop of rain
Just a little drop of rain, rain, rain, rain
Just a little drop of rain
    Come bless this land again
Don’t you know it’s a blue sky don’t hold no rain
Don’t hold your love in vain
Cos we’ve still got some loving left to do
Now the world’s a spinning ball
Two thirds with none to eat
While we chew our scrawny meat
Can you hear those big bells beat?
    What have we done
    To the Mother Goddess Gaia?
Why can’t we nestle in her
    Warm aching bosom?
Aah aah aah aah aah aah aah aah

    Rainy Afternoon by Dark Company.
From CD 1, 'SNAFU', of the triple CD album 'A for Acronym'.
    RAINY AFTERNOON
You see ropes around their necks
    They’re just there for fun
Not tied or hitched in any way
    Nothing from them is swung
    Just for fashion, darkened passion
    Against their milk white gowns
As every night they slowly fall
    And in my senses drown
    Carpet tiles wreathed in smiles
    Lingering on my landing
    Dumbly coloured and poorly lit
    They have their understanding
Arriving packed in neat bound stacks
And pulled tight with a band
If laid out in certain shapes
    A door to another land
    Gaudy chalk in boxes marked
    Lying there just for taking
No price or test of any sort
    Just for pictures making
And beware to have some care
Of what you use them for
What drawings that you do create
Or they'll come back for more

Zakk Black – lead and rhythm guitars
    Barry Bridges - guitar
    Maxx Damage – bass
    Sven Stiglund – drums
    FUN FACTS:
    * This is a song that Pete never sang a proper studio version of and his vocals were lifted from the very rough demo and cleaned up a bit.
    * Well, quite a lot actually. :)
    * The original lead guitar had a dirty sound that simply didn't work, but when Zakk used a clean tone, all the parts suddenly sounded good.
    * Pete actually deviated somewhat from the lyrics he wrote when he sang this, perhaps due to tiredness or being unable to see the lyrics very well.
    * The melody he sings remains the same throughout if you want to try singing along.
    * The key changes weave an audible illusion of variations that are not actually there.
    * The lead guitar is played on Nicodemus.
    * The guitar in the right channel is Barry on the ESP, with Zakk playing the Ice Maiden to the left.

    PLUPERFECT
Tabletop toyset map of the world
    Jigsaw planisphere, edges all curled
Worn out games book, puzzles all done
I looked inside to see what I'd won
I'd won a seat on the train to Strangeville
Or a place on the daily treadmill
I'd won a ticket to a 'no prize' win
Or a packet of bent penny pins
    Mandelbrot paint set, infinity waits
Half finished painting of a garden gate
Last year's calender was there on the wall
I checked the dates, was I there at all?
I looked out the window, was I laying low
Or was I waiting for the Late Late Show
    I couldn't figure out where I'd gone
But I must have done cos I lingered on
Sinewave eyeballs in a metal made head
Robotic vision that can see through lead
    Nostradamus quatrains I could decode
Told me I was going into overload
Told me I'd lived twice every day
That I had to listen to what I'd say
Told me I'd had way too much fun
That I should have walked when I'd run

Isolation phonograph records it oh so well
Enforced in solitude I stare at the wall
Understanding archetypes is like playing pinball
They tell you you’re winning but you don’t understand
It’s languishing anguish from a bright shiny man
Keeping to his scheming he’s oh so intense
Comprehending techno-geeks with more brains than sense
Summon up the darkness good cover for all sin
Creationism cretins wear suits made of tin

    NOW, THE LIGHT
Make me a retard, lower the sky
I wanted to know but I didn't know why
    Previous pressuring updates the need
Hothouse flowers each grown from seed
Now light me up, light me up
    L-l-l-l-light me up
Light me up, light me up
    L-l-l-l-light me up
Trilobytes flourish in an ancient sea
    Nobody ever swims for free
Trapped in ignorance beneath the road
The way lit only by rocks that glowed
Now light me up, light me up
    L-l-l-l-light me up
Light me up, light me up
    L-l-l-l-light me up
    Spiritual confusion often is fun
So you don't know where you're from
Be the 'you' that they want you to be
They will tell you what they want you to see
Now light me up, light me up
    L-l-l-l-light me up
Light me up, light me up
    L-l-l-l-light me up
Call Veronica, tell her the news
She's gotta get off my blue suede shoes
Life goes on but I'm too short
Haven't the fare but I can be bought
Now light me up, light me up
    L-l-l-l-light me up
Light me up, light me up
    L-l-l-l-light me up

    Fun Facts:
    * The lyrics for this song were written 1st June 2013.
    * This is a song that Pete never sang a proper studio version of and his vocals were lifted from the demo and cleaned up a bit.
    * Well, quite a lot actually. 🙂
    * It was during the editing of this track that the main studio computer suddenly decided to mangle itself beyond all recognition, causing weeks of delay and expensive replacement parts to be bought.
    * Fortunately no data was lost due to our cunning back-up strategies.
    * This song is a piece of classic rock in a Britpop style.
    * It is in the key of G and features the gratuitous use of D7 and Cmaj7 chords.

  • Dark Company: Decide to Ride (alpha mix)
Decide to Ride, by Dark Company.
From CD 1, 'SNAFU', of the triple CD album 'A for Acronym'.
    DECIDE TO RIDE
Reaction to refraction, a bent-stick water view
Administer situations to part of Heaven's crew
Stand smartly dressed against the rail
    Uniforms with matching sails
Should we go along with you
    Now should we go along
Should we go along with you
    Now should we go along
Should we go along with you
    Now should we go along
Should we go along with you
    Now should we go along
    Inspected kinetics moving minds around
    Archetypal archetypes esoteric sounds
Take a stand now on the stairs
Under signs saying "On The Air!"
Should we go along with you
    Now should we go along
Should we go along with you
    Now should we go along
Should we go along with you
    Now should we go along
Should we go along with you
    Now should we go along
Checkerboard collectors, gamers of rare delights
Whale bone dice believers gifted with second sight
Braided caps placed there just so
Each one ready to stay or go
Should we go along with you
    Now should we go along
Should we go along with you
    Now should we go along
Should we go along with you
    Now should we go along
Should we go along with you
    Should we go along
    Should we go along
    Should we go along
    Should we go along

    Fun Facts:
    * This is a song that Pete never sang a proper studio version of and his vocals were lifted from the very rough demo and cleaned up a bit.
    * Well, quite a lot actually. :)
    * The VST plugins didn't make the right kind of piano sound somehow so this is from the TG33.
    * The guitar part is played on the Stratocaster.
    * The trumpets come from the Akai S900 and a VST plugin called DSK Brass.
    * There is an argument between the bass, which plays a C, and the piano and guitar, which play a C#, which has a wonderful emotive quality but which ceases to work when anything else is present.
