  • The Chillun: Fisherman
    Fisherman by The Chillun.
The Chillun were one of the finest blues bands ever to play together and for a time they were based in Exeter where they had a residency at the river front pub which is still to this day called the Port Royal. We are not sure what the origins or the end of The Chillun’s story was, only that for the years they played together they were magnificent.
The songs we have here are from two of their demos. The first from 1982 was titled Booze and Blues – Yer Actual Demo and the second from 1984 titled simply Demo. The first four songs are from the Booze and Blues demo and the last four from the Demo.
Unfortunately, as we only had cassette versions of these songs to work with, the passage of time has caused the first two Demo tracks (Baby Too and Sleighride) to sound rather mangled, although the other six tracks seemed to clean up quite well. We will see if we can improve upon these at some time in the future.
We also believe that there was at least one other recording that The Chillun made, probably in 1983. Sadly we have no details of this recording.
We have been trying to remember other song titles and have come up with Painted Lady, which was a splendid rocky blues song in D that ended with Boggy’s drum solo, Cuddles which was rather a fun blues number that Boggy’s drum solo began, and The Bullfrog Blues, which was often the last song of a Chillun show.
The Chillun were Andrew ‘Angus’ Russe on guitar and voice, Nick Banwell on bass and Martin ‘Boggy’ Gorman on drums. Steve Clarke played the keys on the Booze and Blues recording.
Singer and guitarist Andy Russe wrote a fascinating autobiography of The Chillun for us and you can find it here:

  • Mark Drower and the Everyones: I Know I Know You
I Know I Know You by Mark Drower and the Everyones.
    EP: The Blaze Tape
    I KNOW I KNOW YOU
    I may be mistaken babe
Right or wrong, you’ll never know now
    I may be mistaken babe
Right or wrong, it never shows now
I know I know you but I just cannot place it
I know I know you but I just cannot trace it
You said you’d always be there
    Always be my friend
But now you’re gone and I’m all alone
And I’m on my own again
Well, you took all I gave you and you walked away
    You don’t care now
I asked you to help me and you walked away
    We don’t share now
I know I know you but I just cannot place it
I know I know you but I just cannot trace it
I thought it was worth my time
To get to know you well
But since you’ve gone I just can’t tell
    If I should try again
I know I know you but I just cannot place it
I know I know you but I just cannot trace it
You said you’d always be there
    Always be my friend
But now you’re gone and I’m all alone
And I’m on my own again

    Fun Facts:
    * The acoustic guitar is tuned DADGBE for Treasure.
    * It is possible that the first verse of this song was taken directly from the Everyone play itself, so may need to be credited to Frederick Franck, the play's author.
    * This song was played when Everyone was left unfulfilled by his material possessions and his money.
    * It was always called Treasure, its working title, and was never given another name.
    * On the occasion of the Blaze expedition, after lunch and a few ales, another version of this song was recorded.
    * It was arguably not quite entirely triumphant.
    * The post-lunch version, along with The Cabbage Blues, is available only to people who were present on the day, and only by request.
    * Treasure evolved into a Now song called Obsession, which was a truly ghastly and prolonged outburst of drunken nonsensical rantings.
    * Treasure was also subsequently performed by Fooog Dinboffin and the Release, Now, Lemming Meringue and Wud.

  • Mark Drower and the Everyones: This Time Tomorrow
This Time Tomorrow by Mark Drower and the Everyones.
    EP: The Blaze Tape
    THIS TIME TOMORROW
When I’ve said all I’ve got to say
    And you’re moving away
Are you still gonna see my way
    This time tomorrow
When I’ve done all I can
About what I feel and am
Are you still gonna give a damn
    This time tomorrow
When I’ve told you all I plan
    Are you still gonna understand
When I reach out for your hand
    In joy or sorrow
Do I have to tell you
    Do I have to say
    That all we ever needed
Was to see each other’s way
When we’ve left all the queues
And done what we’re going to do
Will we be in each other’s shoes
    This time tomorrow
When we’ve left all the faces
That we thought we would always wear
Will we have left some traces
    Anywhere
Do we have to tell you
    Do I have to say
Do we have to reach you
    Will we find our way
    And all we ever needed
Was to see each other’s way

The Mirror by Mark Drower and the Everyones.
    EP: The Blaze Tape
    THE MIRROR
I see my image is cast upon the wall
I see the mirror but I don’t know what it’s for
Reflected in a moment I can see all I am
Passing on the light well I’m doing what I can
    Now I’m gonna fly high
    I’m gonna fly high
Waves crest and crash in the rhythm of my waking
Moving through the past I can feel foundations shaking
Reflected on the screen I can see what might have been
In others who before who had the strength to dream
    Now I’m gonna fly high
    I’m gonna fly high
We want to say we love you
We want to say it so
We want to say we can feel you
But the words they will not flow
We want to say we love you
We want to say it so
We want to say we believe in you
But the words they will not flow
    The words they will not
    The words they will not
The words they will not flow
I can see the people move through the tides and the times
From the past to future they will sing the same old rhymes
Displayed before our eyes we can see eternal plays
Merging into one as time begins to say
    Now I’m gonna fly high
    I’m gonna fly high

    Fun Facts:
    * The acoustic guitar in this song is tuned DADGBE.
    * One time George performed this song at a friend’s 21st birthday celebration to a large hall full of relatives and friends.
    * During the performance he had a moment of mispronunciation and sang “From the past to pilchard they will sing the same old rhymes”, which caused much hilarity and laughter among the backing singers.
    * The error went completely unnoticed by the relatives.
    * During a Flicker rehearsal that took place upstairs at The King's Arms in Ottery St Mary in 2002, this song was played at high volume to force the appearance of any astral imps that may have lurked there for the previous 20 years.
    * None manifested themselves.
    * The Mirror was the last of the four live songs performed during the play, when Everyone finds resolution through Insight and self belief.
    * The Mirror was subsequently played by Fooog Dinboffin and the Release, Now, Lemming Meringue, Wud and Pok the Bard.
