  • The Bastard Sons of Dennis: The Furniture (part 8: finale)
The Furniture (part 8: finale) by The Bastard Sons of Dennis, from their album Cherry Smoke Empire.
The Furniture (Los Muebles) is a traditional northern Spanish sea shanty from the Asturias region.
It tells a tale of how a dysfunctional family of linguistically challenged fishermen lost and then found some furniture following a flood, and the consequences.
Linguistically challenged means, in this case, they were not terribly bright and could not even speak their own language very well.
The Spanish version has been loosely translated into English by The Bastard Sons of Dennis.
From an idea by Daniel Richardson.
This song and its anomalies of translation make a great teaching aid, if one happens to have students learning English or Spanish.
    THE FURNITURE (PART 8: FINALE)
Ahora hemos encontrado todos sus muebles tio,
Ahora hemos encontrado todos sus muebles tio,
Ahora hemos encontrado todos sus muebles tio,
Qué le hacen para decir, tío?
Qué le hacen para decir, tío?
Now we have found all of your furniture uncle,
Now we have found all of your furniture uncle,
Now we have found all of your furniture uncle,
    What do you say, uncle?
    What do you say, uncle?
    Oh... bueno.
    Oh... good.
Music and lyrics: A. Richardson/G. Davies
Rhythm guitar and Spanish voices: Q.Wim Lijkkes
Lead guitar and English voices: Yuri Nation

  • The Bastard Sons of Dennis: Good Times
Good Times by The Bastard Sons of Dennis, from their album Cherry Smoke Empire.
Good Times was one of the earliest Bastard Sons of Dennis songs, first coming to light in their sand dune sessions on Exmouth beach in the summer of 1994. Sometimes was first performed live by the duo at The Cavern in Exeter that same summer. It also featured in their spontaneous one-off reunion in 1998.
Mr Lijkkes composed this song shortly after hitch hiking and being given a lift by a rather odd man who told him a very strange tale about his life.
Good Times is in the key of G and has some rather interesting temporal anomalies buried within. They sound very natural so you may not hear them immediately.
With its fun acoustic funk jam to start off, this track was sometimes used as a set opener in the duo's longer performances.
    GOOD TIMES
This has gotta be the good times
    No more bad
No more in between for a while
I wanna get down to it
Don't wanna be the spoke in your wheel if I can help it
Well excuse while I tell you what I saw the other day
I met a man with a life to hide and bridges burnt behind him
He had a fleeting glimpse, a breath of freshness passed him
Like he didn't have a chance to catch it when it settled upon his lip
    I don't suppose so
This has gotta be the good times
    No more bad
No more in between for a while
I wanna get down on it
Don't wanna be a spoke in your wheel if I can help it
Well I came across your garden when your flower was unfurling
May I relieve you of the burden of your innocence
Your aura's tantalising, your scent is mesmerising
When I'm near you I have to slip into a realm of fantasy
This has gotta be the good times
    No more bad
No more in between for a while
I wanna get down to it
I don't wanna be the spoke in your wheel if I can help it
Well excuse me while I ask you what's your name and where you've been
Cos you look so damn familiar like a painting, a rocket
    A reflection of my sin
    (Take it down)
I see a hint of roses smiling on your face
I don't mean to make you catch your breath
    I couldn't make you if I tried
I see a hint of roses smiling on your face
I don't mean to make you catch your breath
    I couldn't make you if I tried
And I came across your garden where the walls were gently fading
And the blossom was exhiilerating as it spoke to me
My universe expanded and my questions became answers
As I laid upon the earth and it accepted me
And this has gotta be the good times
    No more bad
No more in between for a while
I wanna get down on it
Don't wanna be the spoke in your wheel if I can help it
This has gotta be the good times
    No more bad
No more in between for a while
I wanna get down on it
Don't wanna be a smoke in your wheel if I can help it
This has gotta be the good times
    No more bad
No more in between for a while
I wanna get down to it
Don't wanna be the spoke in your wheel if I can help it
This has gotta be the good times
    No more bad
No more in between for a while
I wanna get down on ya
I'd like to be the seat upon your bike if you would let me

  • The Bastard Sons of Dennis: Pieces of Me
Pieces of Me by The Bastard Sons of Dennis, from their album Cherry Smoke Empire.
This song was written on Sunday 24th October 1993. It was first played by The Bastard Sons of Dennis on Exmouth beach in the early summer of 1994. It has never been performed live by our gruesome twosome as it has a slow tempo and a sensitive feel, which would be incongruous in one of their high-energy live performances.
This song has a long history and we all felt it deserved to be included on this album. It was performed at the spontaneous gathering of The Bastard Sons of Dennis in May 1998. For a complete change, it features Yuri on bass rather than guitar. This is as an echo of the 1998 jam session. It was recorded at 432Hz instead of 440Hz.
    PIECES OF ME
I tell you but you don't want to know
You made your mind up you want to go
But then from the cold icy stare come the words "I care"
    I care
I don't want to wait around this time
I don't want to wait for things to go wrong
    I've waited too long
    I've waited too long
I need to have you now
    I need your release
I need your peace before I tear myself in two
I want to want you now
    I want that release
    I want your peace
Before I tear myself in two
Pieces of me, pieces of you
We're beads on a worry bead threading us through
    I want your commitment
I want your delicate hand in mine
Oh babe please say yes this time
Oh babe please say yes this time

  • The Bastard Sons of Dennis: Horsemon
Horsemon by The Bastard Sons of Dennis, from their album Cherry Smoke Empire.
In the summer of 1992, The Bastard Sons of Dennis convened and fooled around in a recording studio. Q plucked the strings of Nicodemus and Yuri operated the sequencer. This is the result.
It's a curious piece of music as everything is improvised. Q came up with the main guitar theme as Yuri added new parts to the sequencer loop. Parts were dropped out, dropped back in, and faders and other knobs on the mixing desk were twiddled.
Horsemon may sound like a Jamaican word, meaning 'postman', but actually came about due to restrictions of length on a filename. In the very beginning, our gruesome twosome were searching for a name for themselves. They used their combined Chinese astrological signs, which resulted in 'HorseMonkey', the name that appeared on the poster for their very first live performance. However, only eight characters were permitted by the old Atari Cubase at Silent Running Studios, so the file was truncated and saved as 'Horsemon'.
This is probably the earliest recording of The Bastard Sons of Dennis to exist anywhere on the planet. As such, we felt it was worth including on this album as a bonus track. It is also quite unusual to hear live jamming on a sequencer, and Q's guitar is fabulous, so despite the various messes contained within, we felt the track possesses plenty of artistic merit.

  • The Bastard Sons of Dennis: Ten Years Later
Ten Years Later by The Bastard Sons of Dennis, from their album Cherry Smoke Empire.
Ten Years Later is an original song from the pen of Andy and was written many years ago, with the duo first performing it back in 1994. Is this track about uncertainty? Is God an atheist? Are your flies still undone?
During the recording of Ten Years Later, our engineers and the band together felt that the nature and subject of the song might be a scene between two friends having a chat over coffee. We set about creating a cafe scene, and thanks to those wonderful providers of great sound samples at soundjay.com we have achieved a pleasing result. The adlib voices from Q.Wim and Yuri were all done in one take, and it was the first as it happens.
There's a dark-ish video (of a pretty ordinary performance) of this track here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaSkIapo7Is
    TEN YEARS LATER
    When I was just thirteen
She said that I could take her...
    Where could I take her?
And now it's ten years later...
    Is it over?
    Tell me when it's over...
    Is it over?
I'd like to think it over...
I like to get the best of the changes
I'd like to get the best from the re-arranges
But if we get much closer
    There's a danger we'll start over
Now I take it there's no-one left to shake you from your tree
    Is it over?
I'd like to think it over...
    Is it over?
I'd like to think it over...
I like to get the best of the changes
I'd like to get the best from the re-arranges
But if we get much closer
    There's a danger I'll fall over
Now I take it there's no-one left to break you from that scene
    Is it over?
    Tell me when it's over...
    Is it over?
I'd like to think it over...
    Is it over?

  • Watershed: Who Owns You Now (live)
Who Owns You Now by Watershed, from Watershed Live at The Cooperage 24/12/1990.

This is a bootleg recording of the fabulous Plymouth reggae ensemble known as Watershed. This mix may have come straight off the desk as they were inclined to roll that way. The low hum from the cassette machine is somewhat ghastly, but the band mask it when they are playing.
As this is from a live performance, we left some of the gribulage between songs so you could get a flavour of the band. You might even be able to remember where you were and what you were dong on the night in question. Al, the main songwriter and guitarist, and Jo on vocals and percussion, were both highly charismatic individuals and the band always seemed to have a great rapport with the crowd wherever they played.
These are the last five tracks that the band played that night. The rest of the show was on another 90-minute cassette which was sadly stolen by someone who also loved Watershed’s music many years ago, so we no longer have that in our archives. Songs on that cassette included Judgement Level, Back Page Rage, It’s Not Yours, Saddest Letter, Purple Town, Fashion Conscious and some others.
