Where is the connection between telematics, satellite technology, and Internet of Things? Telematics is a combination of telecommunication plus information plus informatics. This combination enables to provide services at remote locations. So, this can be a satellite you remotely control on a different planet. Or a traffic control system on the street to enable efficient flow of traffic. It can be a telemedicine system where a person carries sensors to characterize the health status and provide data to an emergency room where a doctor detects anomalies. Moreover, the technology is used in autonomous driving vehicles, mobile robots and connected factories. New satellite technology has disruptive potential to increase by telecommunication the networking of the automation system to enable more efficient production.

In this Episode Prof. Dr. Sebastian von Mammen gives a short excurse to the field of Human-Computer-Interaction (HCI). One aspect here is the avatar research, where you can see yourself being represented in the virtual world. What impact does that have on your experience in the virtual world – does it change your behavior for instance if you perceive yourself  differently than in reality

In this Episode we talk about current research projects in the field of Games Engineering. Of course, there is a keen interest in classical computer gaming in the research activities and collaborations, but the technology that comes with games is interesting and relevant to myriads of other industries – in essence, it is about real-time interactive systems. Real-time interactive systems may, for instance, be simulations for training purposes, platforms for interactive product visualization e.g. for the automotive industry. In this context it is also possible to expose humans to situations that would be otherwise not ethically correct, acceptable or too expensive. For instance, one could measure how people see and react before accidents happen in order to improve accident avoidance. Another example where real-time interactive systems are used and helpful is the medical sector (e.g. telemedicine). The Games Engineering programme instills academic and technical knowledge about the design and development of state-of-the-art computer games and engines and the graduates are expected to find jobs in diverse industrial sectors.

The problem is that there are a lot of slightly different versions or dialects of standard software products. The issue occurs when companies transact and exchange data. If you are a large company you can more or less force your business partners to use your “dialect”. But if you are small company you do not have much negotiating power and therefore have to accept the specification of bigger companies.
