Ms. Kenya is a part of the committee that is responsible for Freedom Now Fest, an event that celebrates the 61st anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivering a speech that called for equality, economic justice and voting rights. This took place in West Philly at 40th & Lancaster Streets. The community will once again gather in that sacred space to honor his legacy during Freedom Now Fest on Sunday, Aug. 2, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Hosted by the Freedom Now Committee, the festival commemorates the anniversary of Rev. Dr. King's historic 1965 Freedom Now Rally speech while celebrating the resilience, culture and collective spirit of West Philadelphia through music, art, food, film, family activities and community reflection.

Freedom Now Fest is an opportunity to remember a defining chapter in Philadelphia's civil rights history while inspiring a new generation to continue the work of building stronger, more connected communities.

Munira Edens and Gabby Ballard are organizers from the Philly Black Worker Project, who utilizes collective action, policy change and community power-building to win quality jobs, reduce employment discrimination and improving working conditions in industries that employ significant amounts of Black workers. They joined Dr. Peterson for this week's Citizen WURD segment to discuss a Philadelphia Citizen article, "Fixing the Prison-To-Temp (Worker) Pipeline".

Dr. Kelly Harris is the Senior Staff Director and Lecturer at the Center for Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He joined Dr. Peterson for this week's Tuesday teach-in to discuss his coursework at University of Pennsylvania, the future of African Studies and higher education, and Haki Madhubuti's book, "Black Men: Obsolete, Single, Dangerous? The Afrikan American Family in Transition".

Richelle Payne is the inaugural Vice President for Strategic Communications and Marketing at Hampton University, and an award-winning communicator and expert in brand transformation. She joined Dr. Peterson for this Ready, Set, Grow segment to discuss how small business owners and entrepreneurs can strategically communicate with their primary and potential customers, and her thoughts on Tuskegee University's new dress code policy prohibiting students from wearing bonnets, durags, slippers and revealing clothing in public campus areas.

Dr. Carlos Vargas-Ramos is the Director of Public Policy at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at The City University of New York. He joined Dr. Peterson to discuss Puerto Rico's water crisis.

Eugene Sonn joins us to talk about his article, "Going mobile in North Philly: How local entrepreneurs are taking work on the road."

Dr. Nola Haynes is a former adjunct senior fellow for the Technology and National Security Program at the Center for a New American Security, and served in the Biden-Harris administration as a member of the International Security Advisory Board at the U.S. Department of State. She talks to us about Where are we with this war? With the Houthis now engaged, what are the implications? And what does it mean to have the US running out of munitions as US casualties climb?

Dr. Delana Wardlaw and Dr. Elana McDonald are board certified physicians and they are twins. They talk to us about a new study out of London. Which showed that adults who faced persistent financial hardship showed poorer cognitive performance and signs of accelerated brain aging later in life.

Dr. Michelle Taylor is the Founder and Executive Director of Sankofa Summer School, which uses an Afrocentric approach to provide a series of classes and workshop designed to educate people about the lives and work of people of the African Diaspora. The school runs during the summer months and students are encouraged to set aside time for their enlightenment and opportunity to build community with new people.

She joined Dr. Peterson to discuss the Sankofa Summer School’s curriculum and approach.

Michelle Palmer is the Executive Director of Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia, which provides academic enrichment to highly-motivated, traditionally underserved students in 5th - 12th grades.

Alex Dark is a Germantown Friends School chaperone who worked directly with the “Seeds of Change” participants.

They joined Dr. Peterson to discuss “Seeds of Change”, a Breakthrough program who recently sent their 8th graders to Costa Rica to do STEM experiences, visit the rainforest and learn about the science of nature there.
