Donnita Hathaway is the youngest daughter of legendary soul artist Donny Hathaway, and the visionary Founder and Executive Director of The Donny Hathaway Legacy Project (DHLP), a national nonprofit harnessing the healing power of music to advance mental health awareness, emotional wellness, and suicide prevention through a culturally responsive lens.
Launched officially on October 1, 2025 — Donny Hathaway’s 80th birthday, DHLP creates accessible pathways to healing by blending brain science, spirituality, and the arts. Under Donnita’s leadership, the organization has cultivated partnerships in Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Boston, Alabama, and New York, reaching more than 100,000 people through live experiences, virtual programs, and community activations that center music as medicine. What most people who are familiar with Donny Hathaway don’t know is that he was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic during the height of his career, and on January 13, 1979 he died by suicide at the very young age of thirty-three.
Donnita joins the show to talk about The Donny Hathaway Legacy Project, the importance of focusing on mental health, and suicide prevention.
