Today, his legacy lives on through the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection at Temple University Libraries.

Historian Diane D. Turner calls him a “cultural warrior”—someone who believed that knowledge is power and that preserving history is essential for everyone.

In 2023, Joanna McClinton became the first Black woman to serve as Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

But her journey began as a public defender—standing beside people navigating some of the hardest moments of their lives. After years of service, she stepped into public office in 2015 and quickly rose through leadership in Harrisburg.
