  • McDowell County WV A Home to Black History
McDowell County is the most Southern County in West Virginia, bordering southwest Virginia.  Blacks began migrating into the County when railroads came to the County, on or about 1895.  The railroads provided mass transportation of coal to eastern and mid western parts of the nation.  This new industry created jobs requiring hard labor coupled with low skills.  Because of the lack of suitable housing, coal companies built houses for its employees.  The grouping of these houses was called “coal camps”.
The population increased rapidly, going from 7,300 in 1896 to over 98,000 in 1950.
The Black population increased greatly during this period; and its Black population was the highest of any County in the State.
Along with the influx of Black miners, Black professionals soon followed to serve the community. They included Medical Doctors, Nurses, Dentists, Pharmacists, School Teachers and School Administrators. This professional class served the entire population, except of course, the educational sector.
Coal mining soon became the main industry, employing thousands of employees, with close to 35% being Black.  The coal companies were segregated and several mines’ production staff were nearly all Black.  It should be noted that these mines were duly recognized as being more efficient than other mines.
Black policy makers were included in all phases of civic life, including the union representing the coal miners.
The County once boasted 4 separate Black High Schools, more than any other County in the State.  Its graduates have distinguished themselves in various professions throughout the nation and exhibit great pride in their home County, affectionately referred to as “The Patch”.
Also included in the Black migration were gamblers, women of ill repute and others of similar ilk.   A small area, approximately 6/7 acres, commonly called “Cinder Bottom” was where the above-named, engaged in their individual professions.
Coal is no longer “King” and the population has sunken below 18,000 and is ranked among the poorest counties in the nation.

  • Movie Review : M3Gan from podfest
Stacey and I took some time away from Podfest to review this movie which was a surprise to see it already on VOD. We both gave our opinions of this surprising movie .. M3GAN is a 2022 American science fiction horror film directed by Gerard Johnstone, written by Akela Cooper from a story by Cooper and James Wan (who also produced with Jason Blum), and starring Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, with Amie Donald physically portraying M3GAN and Jenna Davis voicing the character. Its plot follows the eponymous artificially intelligent doll who develops self-awareness and becomes hostile towards anyone who comes between her and her human companion. M3GAN premiered in Los Angeles on December 7, 2022, and was released in the United States on January 6, 2023, by Universal Pictures. The film was a commercial and critical success, grossing about $146 million worldwide against a budget of $12 million and receiving praise from critics for its campy blend of horror and humor, satirical elements, and performances. • WV Eateries : Calacinos
Dominick Calacino and his family saw a vision in the early 1930’s. They purchased the property located in Calloway Heights for $15,500 and built the building where Calacino’s currently stands. In 1934, Beckley’s first pizzeria was opened and Calacino’s soon became one of the top hangouts for high school and college students where they socialized over pizza and danced to jukebox music.
For generations, Dominick served his homemade pizza pie to hundreds of young and old people alike. “Youngsters” enjoyed coming to Calacino’s not only for the best pizza in town, but also to listen to stories of times past. On the backside of a decades-old postcard featuring the Calacino’s building, it says, “There are more marriages made at Calacino’s than in Heaven.” The tradition that started in 1934 by the Calacino’s was one that Dominick refined to perfection over the years of service to his Beckley patrons.
Calacino’s remained open until Dominick passed away in January 2000. In 2009, Jerry and Kathy Zaferatos reopened Calacino’s to carry on the tradition Dominick started in 1934. In December 2016 the tradition was passed to current owners Jeff and Jamie Weeks.  As owners we would like to thank you for choosing Calacino's and becoming part of the tradition.
For over 80 years Calacino's has been serving up great food and fun to our friends in southern West Virginia. Please join us in our historic main dining room, our sports bar and lounge, or enjoy outdoor seating on the deck!

  • WV Eateries :Gino’s and Tudors
Tudor's Biscuit World was the original idea and concept of Bill and Mae Tudor and their son John Tudor. Bill and Mae opened the first Tudors on Washington Street in Charleston, West Virginia, in 1980. Their son John joined them two months later after graduating from East Carolina University.[7] They opened more stores in the Charleston and Huntington areas, and began selling franchises.[8] In 1986, Bill Tudor died[9] and John and his mother continued to grow the business with the addition of Oshel Craigo as their new franchise partner.[10] source Wikipedia
