I have a favorite fairy tale for this time of year when the Sun is moving through the region of Aquarius stars, because all the star names there have to do with good fortune, hidden treasure, and wishes that come true! And what’s more, the Moon is augmenting this Sun position by sweeping past Spica on Monday. Spica is the star of abundance, and it’s worth paying attention to this scene now, and for the next several months.
The tale goes like this: An errant sheep herder finds himself lost in the wood at night and falls asleep beneath a tree. Around midnight his dog gets fidgety, and he wakes to see a giant man with shaggy hair standing beside him. An exchange ensues in which the shepherd boldly tells the specter to leave but the being admonishes him for his foolishness, telling him he has come to grant him a gift of vast riches: A vast treasure of gold and precious stones lies in safety deep under the earth. At twilight and at high noon it is hidden, but at midnight it may be dug up. For seven hundred years have I watched over it, but now my time has come; it is common property, let him find it who can.
This week on Monday, the waning gibbous Moon will move past the star Spica after midnight. Next month, the Moon will move past Spica again just after it is totally eclipsed, and then in April, the first Full Moon of the Spring that is used for determining the sacred festival days will occur once again in this same spot, right next to Spica.
Spica is near the ecliptic, so it’s not unusual for the Moon to appear close to the star, but right now there’s an exceptional quality to these meetings, with Moon gathering up the starry abundance, especially this week, when the Sun is moving through the place of good fortune.
You can find the tale of the Treasure Seeker online, and at my website, it’s a treasure map for unlocking the vast riches that await us, just beneath the surface of things.
