The newest hit on the Morning Roar is our Mind Bender segment, where David evened the score with Dom.  

Our special guests were Patrick Riss, the President of the VU Mock Trial team, and Erica Marciante, the Vice President.  They discussed their upcoming participation in the American Mock Trial Association tournament in State College at Penn State University February 3 through 5.  Our esteemed host, Chris Cokinos, is also a member!

The highlight of the show, however, comes during our sports segment, where the team gave a sterling rendition of the Philadelphia Eagles' fight song.  GO BIRDS!!!!

As of Tuesday, Jan. 10, Route 30, also known as Spring Mill Road, between County Line Road and Montgomery Avenue, will be closed Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Local access will be open for ALL Spring Mill Road parking lots and West Campus lots during construction. Please allow extra time, as this closure will be in effect through Thursday, Sept. 28.

In other news, low-wage workers in Pennsylvania are missing out on the pay hikes that took effect in 23 other states this month. Almost 8-and-a-half-million people are getting higher wages, according to the Economic Policy Institute. Although Pennsylvania is surrounded by states with higher minimum pay, state Senator Art Haywood says the General Assembly, particularly the House, has refused to rise above the current federal minimum wage of 7-dollars-and-a-quarter ($7.25) per hour. Haywood thinks that might change, however, since newly elected Governor Josh Shapiro supports raising the minimum wage.

Haywood states, “I’m very optimistic because now, the House has new members. And those new members, I believe, most of them are committed to raising the minimum wage. So, this last election really may give Pennsylvania the opportunity to catch up with the rest of the states in this region.”

Wednesday, January 25, Villanova will be welcoming Curtis on Tour to the Mullen Center for the Performing Arts, as part of the ACS concert event series.  WXVU will be broadcasting the concert live at 7 PM!

The Curtis Institute of Music is a private conservatory in Philadelphia that is one of the most prestigious to study music in the world.  For more than 10 years, Curtis on Tour artists and ensembles have delighted audiences around the globe with performances that are “exhilarating from beginning to end” (Washington Post).

WXVU's Nick Langan had the opportunity on January 20 to speak with the six performers (two Curtis instructors, four current Curtis students) who will be featured at the Curtis on Tour show at Villanova.  They are:

Lucy Baker, mezzo-soprano

Joseph Tancredi, tenor

Evan Gray, bass-baritone

Miloš Repický, piano (instructor)

Ting Ting Wong, piano (instructor)

We discussed with the performers there musical influences, what drew them to Curtis, the music scene in Philadelphia, and what we can look forward to Wednesday Night, and advice for students with musical interests.

The crew of Chris, David, Allison, and Dom returned for the first show of Villanova’s Spring 2023 academic semester!

At 8:30, we were honored to be joined by Dr. Alicia Strandberg of the Villanova School of Business.  Dr. Strandberg is the director of VU Women In Tech, and the crew discussed the upcoming VU Women In Tech Conference, happening next Saturday at the Inn at Villanova.

They recapped their winter break and went over if any New Year’s resolutions were set.

Villanova (8-7) took on the Big East conference leading Xavier (12-3) at the Finneran Pavilion on a Saturday late afternoon.  The Musketeers got the better of the play in both halves, behind 29 points from Zach Freemantle, in an 88-80 win.

In its first Big East matchup, Villanova (6-5) took on the St. John's Red Storm (10-2) at the Finneran Pavilion on a cold winter's Wednesday Night before Christmas.  After falling behind in the 1st half, the Wildcats played their best half of the season to date in the 2nd half, prevailing 78-63 and extended their winning streak to 5 games under new coach Kyle Neptune.

In the spring semester, we discuss the NFL, college basketball with an emphasis on Villanova basketball, MLB, and college football.
