Jesus in the last moments of his freedom/life does something that makes no sense at all. He takes off his outer garment and wraps a towel around his waist and washes his disciple's feet. This was so counter cultural in the time and made no sense that a respected teacher/rabbi would ever do this.

So often we are striving to move up in life and we will step on anyone that gets in our way. People push others down so they can go up. But here Jesus, the Creator, takes off his robe and gets on his knees to do the dirtiest job. Why? How?

Jesus had a security in three areas that gave him the ability to do this.

1) Authority - (God put all things under his power)

2) Identity - (Came from the Father)

3) Destiny - (He would return to the Father)

The idea is that if we can understand what we have in Christ (Authority, Identity, and our Destiny) we can take the posture of serving others and loving people.

This is a message to help people deal with doubts and aimed toward skeptics. We often get stuck on HOW or even WHY. Why did this happen to me? In this story, everyone was trying to figure out HOW Jesus healed a man who was blind from birth. To them, that was completely impossible. But then Jesus does it. They don’t want to believe in Jesus, so they get stuck on HOW. If they can’t explain it, then they refuse to believe it.

Jesus goes to a town called Sychar and meets a woman near Jacob's Well. Here he encounters a woman who looks for some physical water doesn't even realize who she is encountering. Jesus tells her that if she knew who she was with she would ask for "living water." There is a picture of stark contrast between "living water" and the water from the well. Physically, living water would have been understood as running water provided by God. It's what they refer to the rain (when they get it) that comes from the mountains and waters the land. Since they live in the desert and get so little rain, they attributed this with their gods or God.

The picture of this while at a well is remarkable. She can only think about the water she needs to fill her bucket while Jesus is metaphorically talking about a source of quenchable peace and the Spirit of God internally. But for Jesus to give this woman the "Living Water" he needed to first deal with the water she put in her bucket. That is why he asks about her husband. Until we will "drop our bucket" that we keep running to other sources to fill us up, we will never experience this kind of life that Jesus provides from the inside.

John records stories that took place in the early days of Jesus' ministry. The other writers focused more on what happened near the end. This gives us a unique perspective on what it looked like for the people who were first learning about Jesus. Perhaps some of you are in that place today. Heard about him, but now you are learning who he is.

What are you running out of? Where is your shortage? No matter what the area is in your life, the key is to invite Jesus there and do what he says. This applies to your marriage, your relationships, your business, your finances, your joy, your peace, etc... Every Area of your life.

John describes Jesus as the Word. He is God's Word to us now come in flesh. Good theme to talk about is Jesus being full of Grace and Truth. What does this mean for us, for our church? This is a foundational message to help people to see Jesus as more than just a great teacher or religious leader. He is God and was with Him in the beginning-before the creation of the world. John wants us to know his best is not just a jew from Nazareth, but the Creator.
