Traveling to Gao Min monastery (between Shanghai andNanjing) for a ten-week Chan meditation session, Master Empty Cloud (虛雲老和尚) fell into the river. Nearly drowned; then was beaten atGao Min for refusing to take an administrative job (if you refused a request toserve, you were beaten). More dead than alive, now he sat really still. Afterseveral weeks his strength returned; he started to concentrate as never before.Late one night the novice monk who served tea, while pouring hot water into theteacup, missed the cup and splashed hot water on Master Empty Cloud’s hand. Thecup hit the floor, shattered, and Empty Cloud woke up! All his doubts fellaway and his mind shone with the radiance of virtue. He truly, and at last, 明心見性。

He wrote two poems about it on the spot of course he did,he's a Chinese monk!) one expresses cosmic emptiness; the other praises thewonder of creation, arising from the mind of the Buddha, the Thus Come One.
