  • 52. Zenobia July by Lisa Bunker
This week, Kadi and Teffer review Zenobia July, by Lisa Bunker, for the fourth instalment of our Pride series: Trans Pride! Zenobia July is a late middle grade / early YA cyber mystery featuring a stellar trans protagonist. We spend a lot of time talking about the emotional nuance of setting boundaries; chosen family, biological family, and the benefits and drawbacks we find in each; and, of course, a whole lot of time talking about how we can best support trans kids and youth in our lives! Listen to the end for a surprise cameo. Special thanks to Seth Day of Rad Child Podcast for recommending this one!

  • 51. Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde
This week, Sania and Teffer review Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde for bisexual week! Queens of Geek follows a trio of friends around SupaCon, as they meet their idols (and nemeses) and fall in love. We talk about fandom, fanfic, and ... comic drag? This book is a great reminder that representation and fluff make a great pair, and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • 50. Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan
For our second week of Pride month, Kadi and Teffer review David Levithan’s Two Boys Kissing, a beautiful book about community, coming out, and gay heritage. We get really in depth about the importance of finding our queer ancestors, and being good queer ancestors. We talk about supporting queer kids, what being a good ally means, and a little about our own experiences of connecting with our queer history.

  • 49. Ash by Malinda Lo
We’re spending August reading books about LGBTQ teens to celebrate Pride! For the next five weeks, we will review one book for each letter of the acronym (this year we’re going with LGBTQ, next year we may do one of the other acronyms!)
This week, Sania and Teffer review Ash by Malinda Lo, a retelling of Cinderella centred around a lesbian relationship. We talk a lot about writing and adapting fairy tales, but also about crushes, astrology, and whether or not the fairy godmother represents death? Apologies to all the fantasy fans, because Sania and Teffer don’t have the fantasy chops and occasionally get a little tangled up in world building.
