July 14, 2020'Ya Tu Sabe' Season 1 Episode 13: Minority's Toxic Glorification Of FamilyFamilia!Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful and safe weekend. Today, we are discussing minority's toxic glorification of family in hopes to shed light on some of the social issues Hispanics/POC/African Americans face within their own community.I'm referencing the Hispanic community a lot today because I feel like on top of their shared experiences of being socialized young to be tethered to their family members, I think immigrant families can especially relate to the American Journey of not being accepted by this country right away and having to depend on their community to see them through hardships. And while this is absolutely a beautiful way to take care of one another, we often overlook areas in which we can be helping each other improve mentally and emotionally.Sometimes we put the idea of family in front of the love behind it. We are oftentimes expected to sacrifice ourselves for the comfort of others, especially if they are blood relatives and I believe it's important to start up this dialogue. You see, not many people talk about this a whole lot, especially when we are having open discussions about the minority experience. Because most of us have been raised to believe that this is just 'normal,' so we don't question it. We don't question the apparent mental health issues that are rampant in our communities. We just "deal with it" because that's "how that family member is" because they've "been through a lot." I hope we can come away from this episode with some constructive talking points in order to elevate the conversation and shed educational light on some of the biggest issues impacting communities of color today....more40minPlay

July 01, 2020'Ya Tu Sabe' Season 1 Episode 10: American PrivilegeHello all! I hope you had a wonderful weekend. Today's episode we are discussing what American Privilege truly means. In light of it being 4th of July weekend, I felt like this episode was extra fitting in bringing up the discussion: how do you define your patriotism? And what does patriotism even really mean in the context of such a flawed planet. Maybe if we were actually honest with ourselves with the direction this country has been heading in we might be able to wake up enough people and bring about some real overdue change.
