Today’s episode is the continuation of EP75:
there is / there are in Japanese.

In this episode, we will learn the past forms:

• imashita = there was / there were (for people and animals)
• arimashita = there was / there were (for things)

For example:

「kouen ni takusan hito ga imashita.」
There were many people in the park.

「kouen no tonari ni ookii chuushajou ga arimashita.」
There was a big parking lot next to the park.

We will practice how to describe places and situations in the past.

Remember:
Japanese does not change the verb depending on singular or plural.
The same idea as います / あります also applies to いました / ありました.

But did you know that Japanese people don’t use すごい every time English speakers say “That’s great!”?

In this episode, I’ll explain when すごい sounds natural, when it doesn’t, and what Japanese people actually say instead.

Practice あります (arimasu) and います (imasu) with this beginner-friendly Japanese lesson!

In this practice episode, we’ll do:
✅ Round 1 – Repeat after me (English → Japanese)
✅ Round 2 – Situation practice (Translate before I answer!)

You’ll practice useful everyday phrases like:

• Nihon ni wa shiki ga arimasu.
• Shinjuku ni wa takusan no hito ga imasu.
• Watashi wa kyou ie ni imasu.
• Dareka imasu ka?
• Kono chikaku ni toire wa arimasu ka?
• Pen arimasu ka?
• Chiketto arimasu ka?

Today, let’s learn one of the most useful Japanese grammar patterns:

〜te imasu (ています)

Many learners think 〜te imasu is only used like English “-ing.”

Sometimes that’s true…

But Japanese also uses 〜te imasu to talk about:

• where you live
• where you work
• things you do regularly
• situations that continue over time

You’ll also learn 〜te imashita (ていました) to talk about past situations.

This episode is designed to help you understand when Japanese people naturally use ています, without worrying too much about grammar rules.

Practice real Japanese with Kimi! 🇯🇵

Today’s episode is a short one!

It’s been a busy weekend with my kids, so I didn’t have time to make a longer episode.

But I still wanted to share a quick Japanese tip with you!

Today, we’re talking about the difference between “drive” and the Japanese word “doraibu.”

Even though doraibu comes from the English word drive, Japanese people use it a little differently.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

🚗 unten suru = to drive a car

🚗 doraibu ni iku = to go for a drive for fun

It’s a small difference, but it’s a very natural expression that Japanese people use all the time.

I hope this quick tip helps you sound more natural in Japanese!
