As I have mentioned many times, each story of the twelve tribes of Israel is a story of transformation from sinner to saint. It does not matter how you have sinned or where you started; both Jews and Gentiles are sinners. The book of Romans tells the story of transforming sinners into the many sons of God who come to the glory of God. So, the story of the twelve tribes is a story of transformation, turning different kinds of sinners into the pearl gates of the New Jerusalem.

Welcome back to Bible Study with Jairus. It has been a little while since we met last; the holiday season took us out of town for some good family time. But now we are back and returning to our normal schedule. We want to continue our daily Bible study series. We have been working through Deuteronomy, and we hope to finish out Deuteronomy 33. We are also hoping to spend more time on the story of Joseph.

We are going to continue our study of Deuteronomy 33, looking at the experience of Joseph and its application to Christians today, and also to nations, especially America. How can the experience of Joseph give us insight into what it means to represent God, to be the horn of the wild ox, to resist and chastise the nations? America should be like Joseph, used by God to represent Him and to maintain His justice in the world.

Welcome to Bible study with Jairus. We are going to study Deuteronomy 33 again, looking at the blessing and prophecy Moses spoke over Issachar. Yesterday I talked about the experience and application of Zebulun as the apostle, the sent out one. We looked at Zebulun’s character, how he grew up, and how his destiny was predestined by God to bring people, both Gentile and Jewish, to God, to bring the worship of justice up to the mountain of God. That was the experience of Zebulun, and how God determined and predestined that Jesus would begin his ministry in the land of Zebulun. This was a people who were looked down on in the earlier days, but God would bring the great light there. That’s also how God called Peter from there to become one of the greatest apostles. The way I bring that into the application for a modern Christian experience is this: all of God’s work starts with a humble beginning, and God often hides the greatest revival inside a very humble disguise.

Today we come to the last part of Deuteronomy 33, which is Moses’ final blessing to Jeshurun. Jeshurun is a name for Jacob, for the Israelites. It means God’s upright ones, God’s upright person, the righteous. Moses called the Israelites Jeshurun when he finished his prophecies regarding the twelve tribes of Israel.

When Moses spoke these words, God’s chosen people were standing right on the edge of a land flowing with milk and honey. Moses understood the nature of the human heart and how easy it would be to forget God’s blessings once the people were surrounded with the comforts of the Promised Land. Chapter after chapter, he repeats the law to the people, not just as a set of instructions or rules, but as a merciful warning against drifting into cycles of rebellion and sin. And right at the end of this powerful warning, he summarizes the law with two key commands that will help God’s people love God and their neighbor.

Welcome back to Bible study with Jairus. We continue our study of Deuteronomy 33, Moses’ prophecy concerning the tribe of Dan. We will look at Moses’ words alongside Jacob’s earlier prophecy about Dan, and consider what God’s salvation looked like in Dan’s story. I pray the Holy Spirit gives us understanding. Welcome back to Bible study with Jairus. Today we are going to look at the prophecy concerning Jacob’s son Asher, both the blessing Jacob spoke over him and the blessing Moses later spoke over him. Jacob said that Asher’s food would be rich, and that he would provide delicacies fit for a king. That blessing was rooted in something Jacob had observed firsthand: Asher’s life was marked by being a peacemaker, by bringing good food to the table, and by serving others with a generous, hospitable spirit.

Moses took that same observation and developed it even further. In his blessing, Moses declared that Asher would be the most blessed of all the sons, favored by his brothers above the rest. He would be the peacemaker, embodying what the Apostle Paul later calls the bond of peace in Colossians 3, the peace of Christ ruling in the heart, the bond that holds us together as one body.

First, the firstborn sons of the Israelites in Egypt were covered by the blood in order to survive. The firstborn Israelite males born in the wilderness also needed this redemption. Second, this is not just a simple repetition, but an act of deeper spiritual significance.

There is a subtle point here that I didn't notice before when I read the Bible. The firstborn Israelite males had 273 more males than the male Levites, who were a month old or more. Does this mean that 273 people had no way of using the Levites to redeem their firstborn sons? What kind of family did these 273 people have? There are no more male Levites older than one month left, leaving them no choice but to pay money to redeem their firstborn sons.

Perhaps the 273 Israelite families were negligent and didn't come near to the priests often enough. Maybe that's why they have to pay the price by giving redemption money. "God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life." (NIV, Galatians 6:7-8).

Perhaps the parents of these 273 Jews neglected to come near to the priests, or they didn't worship and offer sacrifices every year according to Jehovah's rules, so, in the end, no Levites could ransom them. Perhaps they were at the bottom of the Levite's list of favorites and didn't get chosen in the shortage. God is merciful and still gives them a chance by allowing them to pay redemption money to make things right
