திருப்பாவை - முன்னுரை 2: Thiruppavai Introduction 2

திருப்பாவை பன்னிரண்டு வைணவ ஆழ்வார்களில் ஒருவரான ஆண்டாள் பாடிய நூல் ஆகும். இது 30 பாடல்களால் ஆனது. வைணவப் பக்தி நூல்களின் தொகுப்பான நாலாயிரத் திவ்வியப் பிரபந்தத்தின் 473 தொடக்கம் 503 வரையுள்ள பாடல்கள் திருப்பாவைப் பாடல்கள் ஆகும்.

தமிழ் நாட்டில் மார்கழி மாதத்தில் கன்னிப் பெண்கள் பாவை நோன்பு நோற்றனர். இதன் போது விடியு முன்பே எழும் கன்னியர் பிற பெண்களையும் துயில் எழுப்பிக்கொண்டு ஆற்றில் நீராடி இறைவனைத் துதித்து வழிபடுவர். இதனைப் பின்னணியாகக் கொண்டு எழுந்ததே இந்நூல். இதனால் தற்காலத்திலும் பாவை நோன்புக் காலத்தில் இப்பாடல்கள் பாடப்பட்டு வருகின்றன.

The Thiruppavai is a Tamil devotional poem attributed to the female poet-saint Andal (also known as Nachiyar, Kodhai or Goda Devi). It consists of thirty stanzas (paasurams) in praise of Thirumal (a manifestation of Lord Vishnu). It is a part of Divya Prabandha, a collection of the works of the twelve Alvars, that is considered an important part of the devotional genre of Tamil literature. In Thiruppavai, Andal gives a universal call to all people to recite the name and glories of Lord Vishnu.
