1 Thessalonians 5: 17-19.
King James Version (KJV)
17 Pray without ceasing.
18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
19 Quench not the Spirit.
In verse 17, We as Christian should have a habit of praying every day because otherwise, we will fall into temptation and also not to meditate the scripture day and night. It is critical to know that prayer must follow after the meditation of biblical reading to make sure we have listened to what the Holy Ghost has informed us.
Next, the author has mentioned that in every thing give thanks, he has presumed that every reader who read this verse must be a disciple of Jesus. Otherwise, it is problematic to say that it must be applicable to everyone. For example, somebody has been severely possessed with demons, and he sleeps on the graveyard for twenty years, shall he give thanks to God so he is possessed with many demons? Of course not. Or maybe someone’s family member has been murdered, shall he give thanks to God like this? Oh thank you dear Lord, my beloved brother has been murdered by some psychopath, and if not, I will be mad about you.
When a preacher is trying to quote this verse absent-mindedly, he is making a joke to his church members. Here the author mentioned that Jesus Christ is concerning you… Which one is he talking about? It is the other disciple. Why should only disciples of Jesus Christ apply this verse to them? Because they are chosen in this lifetime to serve God’s purposes, so their life is also under the providence of God, and thus they shall give thanks to God in everything. Therefore, every time when you read the Bible you must also pay attention to who the author is talking to? Otherwise, it is inappropriate to say that it means everyone.
Finally, why quench not the Spirit? Which Spirit? It is the Holy Ghost. So, next time when you read the Bible or pray to God, but unawares, the Holy Ghost is trying to say something to you, don’t resist it with your stubbornness. Submit your way and reckon to the Holy Ghost, but never to devils. Don’t fall into presumptuous sins by misinterpreting the holy scripture. We should always ask the author of any books in the Bible about who are you talking to? Don’t jump to any conclusion that it must mean to every Christian.
Last but not least, No preacher should assume that God is in control of every circumstance! Because he simply doesn’t do that. In the Bible, God already told many people that he doesn’t control your wickedness, rebellion, and sinful decisions and actions. So, if a preacher goes jogging on a hillside, and someone merely crushes the preacher’s face on purpose, can you assert that was God’s will to torture an innocent man? Shall we make an awful excuse to say that God is in control of every little thing? So that we hold no responsibility for any consequence of our sins? Of course no way.
