Ying Wan Loh is an award-winning engineer who works on phenomenal Rolls-Royce engines. We are talking about culture shock as an international student in Glasgow, busting stereotypes and dealing with microaggressions in the workplace. As an East Asian woman succeeding in engineering and manufacturing sectors, Ying is stamping out so many bad stereotypes and setting new standards. We love to see it! This episode is part of my celebrations for International Women in Engineering Day which is celebrated on 23rd June every year.

I am joined by actress Kanako Nakano who I discovered through White Pearl, a play about a fictional skin-whitening cosmetics company. In this episode we’re talking about colourism, the prejudice based on skintone usually with a preference for lighter skin. We share our Asian experiences of colourism and how I was encouraged to keep out of the sun so I don’t tan. What are your experiences with Asian beauty standards and colourism?
We also explore Kanako’s international theatre work, skin care routines, wasteful packaging, cultural belonging and finding our voice. Are Asians less likely to speak up and represent ourselves? Now she has been living in the UK longer than in Japan, what are the cultural differences?

In this episode, we talk about Black Lives Matter, Kpop and my friend Dominic (@dominicvin_) shares his coming our stories, including to his Filipina mum. As a mixed race Asian in the LGBT+ community, he sometimes feels like "a minority within a minority within a minority". Dominic shares how he found his community, his top Kpop song recommendations and we ask: why does the Gay community love Lady Gaga?!

Basil Witsqa is Bruneian teacher and performer with both Malay and Filipino heritage. Our conversation includes the real blend of cultures represented in Basil's life including religions, languages and Western influences. Basil shares the challenges and successes while creating a space for musical theatre productions. I can definitely relate to an upbringing where creative interests were seen as only hobbies and not career options! We also explore how to make American stories accessible to a local Bruneian audience and how the young nation is finding its identity.
